    Notes: Summary Oriented overgrowths of crystals of organic compounds on cleavage layers of talc and cadmium iodide and of NH4J on talc are described. These oriented overgrowths are remarkable in view of the fact that thevan der Waals forces between the layers of these substrate crystal lattices are only weak. The crystals of NH4J oriented on talc have a square contour in contrast to the triangular crystals of NH4J oriented on mica.

    Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Methode der Raumzeiger zur Darstellung räumlicher Oberwellen in elektrischen Maschinen betractet. Die allgemeinen räumlichen Vektorgleichungen werden in einem natürlichen bzw. in einem beliebigen Koordinatensystem beschrieben. Es wird gezeigt, daß die verschiedenen harmonischen Modelle ohne Matrizenoperationen erhalten werden können. Die Beziehungen zwischen den Matrizen- und Raumzeiger-schreibweisen werden untersucht. Die Darstellungen der Maschine sind für die Analyse stationärer und nichtstationärer Vorgänge anwendbar. Schließlich wird die Ableitung harmonische Transformationen berücksichtigt.
    Notes: Contents In the present paper the space vector method is described for the analysis of uniform air-gap three-phase and two-phase machines, taking into account the effects of m.m.f. space harmonics. The space vector equations are established in a natural and also in an arbitrary reference frame. It is shown that the various harmonic models can obtained without performing matrix transformations. The relationship between matrix and space vector forms is discussed. The models derived are suitable for both steady-state and transient analysis. Methods of derivation of harmonic transformations are also presented.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris and Aporrectodea tuberculata) on the rate of net N mineralization was studied, both in soil columns with intact soil structure (partly influenced by past earthworm activity) and in columns with sieved soil. Soil columns were collected from a well drained silt loam soil, and before the experiment all earthworms present were removed. Next, either new earthworms (at the rate of five earthworms per 1200 cm3, which was only slightly higher than field numbers and biomass) were added or they were left out. At five points in time, the columns were analyzed for NH 4 + , NO 3 − , and microbial biomass in separate samples from the upper and lower layers of the columns. N mineralization was estimated from these measurements. The total C and N content and the microbial biomass in the upper 5 cm of the intact soil columns was higher than in the lower layer. In the homogenized columns, the C and N content and the microbial biomass were equally divided over both layers. In all columns, the concentration of NH 4 + was small at the start of the experiment and decreased over time. No earthworm effects on extractable NH 4 + were observed. However, when earthworms were present, the concentration of NO 3 − increased in both intact and homogenized cores. The microbial biomass content did not change significantly with time in any of the treatments. In both intact and homogenized soil, N mineralization increased when earthworms were present. Without earthworms, both type of cores mineralized comparable amounts of N, which indicates that mainly direct and indirect biological effects are responsible for the increase in mineralization in the presence of earthworms. The results of this study indicate that earthworm activity can result in considerable amounts of N being mineralized, up to 90 kg N ha−1 year−1, at the density used in this experiment.

    Notes: This paper is based on research of the restoration of species-rich calcareous grasslands in The Netherlands, over the last 30 years. Chalk grassland is a semi-natural vegetation with a high density of species at a small scale. This type of vegetation was once widespread in Western Europe as common grazing land, mainly for flocks of sheep for which the main function was dung production. In some regions of Central Europe, these grasslands were also used for hay production. The dung was used to maintain arable field production at a reasonable level. In the chalk district in the southernmost part of The Netherlands some 25 sites of this vegetation, varying in area from 0.05–4.5 ha, are still present. Chalk grassland completely lost its significance for modern agricultural production after the wide application of artificial fertilizer following World War II. This grassland has a high conservation value both for plants and animal species, of which a large number of species are exclusively restricted to this biotope. When conservation activities started at a large scale in the early 1960s, three different types of restoration activities could be distinguished: (1) restoration of fertilized sites; (2) restoration of abandoned grasslands; and (3) recreation of chalk grassland on former arable fields. The main aim of the restoration attempt is to create and/or improve sustainable conditions for both plant and animal species characteristic of the chalk grassland ecosystem. In the process of restoration, several phases of different activities can be distinguished: (1) pre-restoration phase, during which information of the land use history is collected and, based on these data, clear restoration goals are established; (2) initial restoration phase, during which effects of former, non-conservational land use has to be undone in order to stimulate germination and establishment of target species originating from soil seed bank and species pool; (3) consolidation phase, including the introduction and continuation of a regular management system for sustainable conservation; and (4) long-term conservation strategy, including measures to prevent disturbance from the outside and genetic erosion and extinction of locally endangered plant populations.

    Notes: The design of an electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) resonator suitable for single crystal studies is reported. An outline is given of the mechanical and electronic construction of the resonator. This paper will focus on the construction suitable for studies at 4.2 K, but the design can be easily adapted to a flow cryostat for variable temperature measurements. The rf-coil efficiency has been measured and is high and fairly constant over the frequency range from 0.3 to 20 MHz. Measurements on a test compound, show that the baseline stability is good over this frequency range. Even for low abundant nuclei as 13C, the signal to noise ratio is very good.
