    Schlagwort(e): geofluids
Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Frontiers in Geofluids is a collection of invited papers chosen to highlight recent developments in our understanding of geological fluids in different parts of the Earth, and published to mark the first ten years of publication of the journal Geofluids. The scope of the volume ranges from the fundamental properties of fluids and the phase relationships of fluids encountered in nature, to case studies of the role of fluids in natural processes. New developments in analytical and theoretical approaches to understanding fluid compositions, fluid properties, and geological fluid dynamics across a wide range of environments are included. A recurrent theme of research published in Geofluids is the way in which similar approaches can be applied to geological fluids in very different settings and this is reflected in the diverse range of applications of fluid studies that are included here. They include deep groundwater flow, hydrocarbons in faulted sedimentary basins, hydrothermal ores, and multiphase flow in mid-ocean ridge systems. Other topics covered are geothermal waters, crustal metamorphism, and fluids in magmatic systems. The book will be of great interest to researchers and students interested in crustal and mantle fluids of all sorts.

Notizen: [Auszug] GEOLOGICAL processes have a reputation for grinding exceedingly slowly. Even rapid events such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions are part of a continuum of catastrophes affecting a part of the Earth's crust over a long time. Sometimes, however, as illustrated by Goldfarb et al. on page 296 ...

Notizen: [Auszug] THE array of natural processes that the geochemist works with includes some that are remarkably effective at taking scarce metals from the most unpromising starting materials — common silicate rocks or melts — and concentrating them up to form ore bodies. Nevertheless, a few of the ...

Notizen: [Auszug] THE past twenty years have seen enormous progress in our understanding of the interior of our planet, but some very simple questions about the crust remain controversial. A key question, which has implications for our understanding of how plates deform, how ore deposits develop, and for deep waste ...

Notizen: [Auszug] Arguably the simplest way to review the state of a subject is not to commission an article by an expert reviewer, but just to make a statistical summary of what is going on in that field. Democracy does not have the same standing as a scientific methodology as it does as a principle for ...

Notizen: Abstract Rare but widespread relics of sodic amphibole occur in metabasites and metacherts of the Haast Schists and related Caples Terrane rocks. Present main-stage metamorphic assemblages are frequently chemically equivalent to earlier sodic amphibole bearing assemblages, indicating that these rocks underwent an earlier, higher P/Tmetamorphism prior to formation of the present pumpellyite-actinolite and greenschist facies assemblages. The earlier assemblages were stable during and after early isoclinal folding, but were replaced by the present moderate P/T assemblages prior to the last major fabric-forming deformation. The change in conditions was due to thermal relaxation, probably accompanied by uplift and erosion, and peak metamorphic temperatures were about 350–370° C in the pumpellyite-actinolite zone of the Caples Terrane and near 390° C in the greenschist facies chlorite zone near Queenstown. According to Henley (1975) these greenschist facies rocks attained a pressure of at least 6.4±0.4 kb during their history, but a pressure of 4.6±0.6 kb has been estimated for a chlorite zone rock from Middlemarch, and so the 6.4 kb estimate probably refers to the maximum pressure attained during the earlier, higher P/T metamorphism. Similar changes in ‘metamorphic facies series’ with time occur in some older and more complex metamorphic belts such as the Caledonides, and this study suggests that it may be possible to interpret particular elements in the metamorphic development of such belts in terms of specific circum-Pacific analogues.

Notizen: Abstract During prograde metamorphism of the Connemara pelites, sillimanite first develops in biotite immediately adjacent to, or replacing, garnet. In some rocks, breakdown of garnet+muscovite and staurolite +muscovite+quartz leads to the development of fibrolite pseudomorphs after garnet. The textures indicate a constant volume replacement of garnet with movement of Al from staurolite and muscovite in the matrix towards the few, widely scattered, garnet sites. The complex ionic reaction patterns are the result of the strong preference of sillimanite to grow on biotite that is replacing garnet, and this pattern of preferred nucleations is taken to indicate that the equilibrium conditions for the reaction were only overstepped by the minimum required for initial sillimanite nucleation. Chemical movements were controlled by the heterogeneous nucleation pattern, not by intrinsic properties of the moving species. In order for extensive reaction to occur under near-equilibrium conditions, the rate at which the total thermal reaction proceeded must have been controlled by the supply of heat to the rocks rather than by diffusion or local reaction steps.
