    Notes: Abstract Seasonal sampling was carried out based on day/night, vertically stratified tows (100 or 125 m strata) in the upper 900 m of the water column over the mid-slope commercial fishing grounds south of Tasmania. A large midwater trawl (105 m2 mouth area) was used with an opening/closing cod-end. Subtropical convergence and subtropical species dominated the fauna, but many less abundant, more widely-distributed species were also present. Fishes, which contributed 89% of micronekton biomass and 135 of 178 species, were dominated by the Myctophidae (48% biomass and 48 species). Twenty micronekton species made up 80% of the total biomass. Overall, the micronekton fish biomass in this region was 2.2 g m−2 wet weight. A pronounced day/night shift in the distribution of biomass was attributable to diel migratory species. During the day, 〈0.2% of the total micronekton biomass was found in 0 to 300 m; most biomass was below 400 m, with peaks at 400 to 525 m and 775 to 900 m. At night, 53% of the biomass was found in 0 to 300 m, with progressively less in each deeper stratum. The vertical ranges of individual species typically exceeded 400 to 500 m during the day and night and were non-coincident, although nyctoepipelagic migrators were concentrated in the surface 200 m at night. Distinct epipelagic, lower and upper mesopelagic assemblages were identified, and patterns of epipelagic migration, limited migration and non-migration were categorised for species from each of the lower and upper mesopelagic assemblages. The vertical distribution of these assemblages was coincident with the primary water masses: subantarctic mode water (∼250 to 600 m) and antarctic intermediate water (below ∼700 m). The flux of migrating micronekton, estimated at 0.94 to 3.36 g C m−2 yr−1 to the lower mesopelagic and 1.14 to 4.06 g C m−2 yr−1 to the upper mesopelagic, appeared to be considerably outweighed by the consumption needs of aggregated mid-slope benthopelagic predators. We suggest that advection of mesopelagic prey in antarctic intermediate water may sustain aggregated populations of orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) and other predators on the micronekton in mid-slope depths at this site.

    Notes: A review of energy use and the life histories of deep-water demersal fishes suggests that there are two primary groups or guilds; those that live dispersed over the sea floor and those that aggregate in association with topographic features like seamounts. Dispersed deep-sea fishes typically have a body plan designed for slow cruising or ‘sit and wait’ predation, and are characterized by very low energy stores and metabolic rates. Scaled for body size, the metabolism of these fishes was comparable to that of bathypelagic fishes. On the other hand, aggregatory deep-water species are characterized by robust morphology and strong locomotory ability to maintain themselves in environments characterized by strong, variable currents. Their flesh has high protein and lipid but low water content. The metabolic rate of orange roughy, an aggregating deep-water species, was substantially higher than that of dispersed deep-water fishes and was comparable to that of haddock, a shelf demersal species. However, although the estimated ration of orange roughy was higher than that of dispersed demersal deep-water species, its growth rate was comparable and its growth efficiency was far lower due to its high metabolic costs. Large deep-water dispersed fish species are characterized by late maturity and an extended reproductive period, but these characteristics are less pronounced than in deep seamount-associated species, which may live in excess of 100 years.

    Notes: Morphometric variation was used to examine the stock structure, in southern Australian waters, of the deepwater marine teleost Hoplostethus atlanticus, orange roughy. Seven samples were collected from non-spawning aggregations in 1989–1990. Three samples were also collected in the winter of 1992, two from the main spawning site off the eastern coast of Tasmania (St Helens), and the third from the other main fishing ground south of Tasmania. The 38 morphometric measurements taken from each of over 1300 fish were size-standardized by an allometric formula and analysed by univariate and multivariate statistics. The results indicate significant variation in the morphology of orange roughy caught from geographically distinct aggregations. They further suggest that the main spawning aggregation may consist of fish from different groups at different times of the spawning period. There appear to be at least seven morphologically distinguishable stocks of orange roughy in southern Australian waters, despite genetic data indicating appreciable levels of gene flow between them.

    Notes: Fecundity of orange roughy in 1987–1989 adjusted for standard length (S.L.) varied significantly between New South Wales (42 787 eggs female−1) South Australia (35 339 eggs female−1) and east Tasmania (31 085 eggs female−1). Only 10-17% of the variability in fecundity of eastern Tasmania orange roughy was explained by s.l. in any year from 1987–1992. However, liver condition and age of the fish, in combination with s.l., explained 27% of the variation in fecundity. Fecundity declined in fish over 60 years old. It was also significantly correlated with lipid levels in the ovary, in particular, with triacylglycerol as a proportion of the total lipid fraction. Significant interannual changes in fecundity appeared to be related to the impact of fishing. From 1987–1992, the orange roughy stock off east Tasmania was reduced by 50% by the fishery, and mean fecundity increased 20% over that period. This compensatory increase in individual fecundity, combined with an apparent increase in the proportion of females spawning annually from 54 to 71%, limited the decline in the population's egg production over this period to approximately 15%.

    Notes: Abstract In our study of the condition of larval cod (Gadus morhua) collected off southwest Nova Scotia in winter-spring, 1983, we (1) examined relationships between larval condition and ambient environmental conditions, and (2) compared the use of simple morphometric indices of larval condition and of multivariate statistics to obtain information relevant to larval condition. Twelve indices of relative condition were obtained, based upon seven measurements made on each larva, and a principal component (PC) analysis was performed on these condition indices. Most condition indices and the first PC were significantly correlated with numbers of nauplii and of zooplankters per m3 in the water column, which are direct measures of food available to the larvae, but not to less direct measures of environmental quality for the larvae, such as plankton displacement volume or chlorophyll concentration. Conventional indices based upon relations of dry weight or body height at the anus to length were most sensitive to environmental conditions. There was no apparent advantage in performing a multivariate analysis based upon a larger series of measurements.

    Notes: Abstract Species of Calanus were sampled at stations off southwest Nova Scotia during an 8-d cruise in June, 1982. A simple model using shipboard measurement of molting rates of predominant copepodite stages accurately predicted the changes in cohort structure that occurred at stations along a transect at the beginning and end of the cruise. The combined durations of C. finmarchicus (Gunnerus) stages CIII and CIV, calculated from the inverses of molting rates corrected for presence of diapausing C. glacialis Jaschnov, corresponded well with development times based on laboratory rearing experiments. We conclude that our molting rate measurements accurately reflected processes in nature. This methodology is useful for analyzing the dynamics and production of copepod populations.

    Notes: Abstract Fine mesh (0.080 mm) zooplankton samples were collected along an onshore-offshore transect during three cruises (February to May, 1983) off southwest Nova Scotia, Canada. The small harpacticoid copepod Microsetella norvegica was numerically the dominant copepod during the winter (February) cruise, where it composed up to 50% of the total zooplankton, and was consistently among the three most abundant copepods during the spring cruises. Due to its small size (〈0.45 mm in length), M. norvegica has rarely been reported from plankton surveys of the northwest Atlantic. However, existing reports indicated it varies interannually from being a rare to an abundant member of the zooplankton community in the northwest Atlantic.
