Notes: The fluorescence decay Si i atomic lines after electron impact excitation of SiH4 molecular gas was observed, and the level excitation cross sections (LECS) of Si i fragments were determined by separating the contribution from cascade transitions to line emissions. Observed transitions were 4s 1P–3p2 1D, 4s 3P–3p2 3P, 3d 1P–3p2 1S, 3d 1D–3p2 1D, 3d 1F–3p2 1D, 3d 3P–3p2 3P, and 3p3 3D–3p2 3P, for which the LECSs of the upper levels were determined at 100 eV excitation energy. The contribution of the direct excitations to these line emissions were found to range from 37% to 80%. Analysis of the 4s 1P–3p2 1D decay curve also gave the LECSs of the cascading levels 4p 1P, 4p 1S, and 4p 1D. Also obtained were some radiative lifetimes not reported before.

Notes: The presence of a high-frequency ((approximately-greater-than)6 MHz) oscillation in the discharge current and voltage of a plasma-focus device is found experimentally and is explained by using equivalent circuit analyses. The occurrence of such an oscillation is attributed to the excitation of the resonant oscillation in the discharge circuit. It is also shown that the high-frequency response of the driver circuit, which consists of a capacitor bank and cables, plays an important role in determining the high-frequency behavior of the discharge current and voltage.

Notes: By applying a dithiol (1,6-hexanedithiol) treatment, it was observed that a submonolayer of gold colloidal particles deposited by using an aminosilane adhesion agent [i.e., 3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyltrimethoxysilane] transform themselves into chains consisting of a few gold colloidal particles. In those chains, gold colloidal particles are believed to be linked by alkane chains derived from the dithiol molecules. The particle chain was formed on a SiO2 substrate with source, drain, and gate metal electrodes defined by electron beam lithography. It was observed that the gold particle chain bridged a gap between the source and drain forming a single electron transistor with a multi-tunnel junction in the particle chain. The electron conduction through the chain exhibited a clear Coulomb staircase and the periodic conductance oscillation as a function of gate voltage. These measurement results corresponded closely to the results of a simulation based on the orthodox theory. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Stand structure and regeneration pattern were examined inAbies sachalinensis coastal forest in northern Hokkaido. In the forest a similar phenomenon to the wave regeneration in subalpine forests has been found. Wave regeneration has been reported for montaneAbies forests in central Japan and North America. Differences and similarities between wave-type stands in this coastal forest and wave-regenerated montane forests were clarified. The shift of dead tree zone, stand structure and regeneration pattern in wave-type stands are the same as in subalpine wave-regenerated forests. High density of individuals is considered to be an internal factor which causes stand-level dieback and also enables the stands to persist in the severe environment in both forests. A difference between wave-regenerated forests andA. sachalinensis wave-type stands is the number of dead tree zones, which is only one in wave-type stands. Changes of regeneration patterns ofAbies sachalinensis with environmental gradient from seaward to inland were related to this difference.

Notes: Emergence, survival and mortality patterns of current-year oak (Quercus crispula Blume) seedlings were investigated for 4 consecutive years in a secondary oak forest in Hokkaido, northern Japan. Despite the emergence of a considerable number of oak seedlings in the years following masting, few current-year seedlings survived until the end of the growing season. Almost all of the seedlings died from damage to their stems caused by the gnawing of rodents. Rodent gnawing on transplanted oak seedlings was also observed in the year following masting but not in the year following a bad crop year. Cuttings of dwarf bamboo, Sasa, did not reduce the seedling mortality caused by gnawing. However, transplanted oak seedlings were gnawed more quickly when they were placed on the forest floor with a thicker Sasa covering. All rodents trapped in the vicinity of the study area were Apodemus speciosus Temminck. These results suggest that rodents strongly influence the recruitment of oak trees not only through the predation and dispersal of acorns but also through gnawing seedlings.

Notes: Summary Dehalogenation polycondensations of 2,7-dibromo-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene with isolated zero-valent nickel complex and electrochemically generated zero-valent nickel complex afford π-conjugated poly(9,10-dihydrophenanthrene-2,7-diyl). The electrochemically synthesized polymer is obtained as a thin film on electrode, and shows a reversible electrochemically doping-undoping cycle in an oxidation region. The polymer has essentially the same π-conjugation system as that of poly(p-phenylene).

Notes: Abstract Phosphinated linear polystyrene was synthesized and used as a ligand of palladium catalysts. It showed high activity for the ethoxycarbonylation of 4,4′-dibromobiphenyl (I) in the presence of triethylamine. The catalysts acted as homogeneous under the reaction conditions (150°C, p(CO) = 10 kg/cm2), and precipitated as solid materials after the reaction. Catalytic performances highly depended on the compositions of the solvent, and the highest activity was achieved in ethanol.

Notes: Aminoalkyl celluloses (AmACs) were prepared from 6-chlorodeoxycellulose and aliphatic diamines H2N(CH2)mNH2 (m = 2, 4, 6, 8). Their adsorption and desorption of divalent heavy metal ions such as Cu2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and their mixtures were also investigated in detail.Adsorption of metal ions on AmACs was remarkably affected by the pH of the solution, the metal ion and its initial concentration, and also the number of methylene units in the diamines. No adsorption of metal ions occurred on AmACs in strongly acidic solutions. However, metal ions were adsorbed rapidly on AmACs from weakly acidic solutions and the amount of adsorption increased with increasing pH. The effectiveness of AmACs as adsorbents decreased with increasing length of the methylene moiety, and AmACs from ethylenediamine (m = 2) was most effective. The adsorption of metal ions on AmACs was in the order Cu2+ 〉 Ni2+ 〉 Co2+ 〉 Mn2+. Accordingly, their behavior followed the Irving-Williams series and Cu2+ ions were preferentially adsorbed from solutions containing metal ion mixtures. The adsorbed ions were easily desorbed from the AmACs by stirring in 0.1 M HCl.
