Notes: Summary A headspace, gas chromatographic method for determining residual solvents in pharmaceutical products such as the gonadotrophin powders, has been developed. The method allows the determination of residual solvents by transferring the samples directly into a vial contianing 10 mL 2M sodium chloride; the analysis is carried out by sampling the headspace and separating by capillary gas chromatography using a programmedtemperature vaporizer (PTV) injector. The procedure described is simple, sensitive and reproducible. The lower limit of detection is 20 ppb for ethyl alcohol, 8 ppb for acetone and 0.5 ppb for diethyl ether.

Notes: Summary A new method of analysis using headspace gas chromatography with microcapillary columns is proposed. Small diameter (50 μm I.D.) fused-silica capillary columns with non-extractable SE-54 and PS-255 polysiloxane stationary phases were used for the analysis of low boiling organic compounds. The small diameter columns possess the usual very high efficiency so that the method can be employed for the headspace analysis of complex mixtures. The use of short microcolumns reduces the analysis times in comparison to conventional capillary columns. Good performances were obtained in the analysis of volatile compounds in some lemon essential oil, perfumes, and water samples.

Notes: Summary Gas chromatography of polychlorinated biphenyls and chlorinated pesticides in water samples is carried out after adsorption from a 25–500 mL sample, on a cartridge containing 100 mg aminopropyl-bonded porous silica. The clean-up step in which the PCBs and chlorinated pesticides are separated in different eluates is achieved by passing 25 mL of 40% aqueous methanol through the NH2 Sep-Pak cartridge. The PCBs are desorbed with 500 μL ethylacetate, which is concentrated and analysis by GC-ECD. The average recovery, at 1 ppb is 〉97% with a standard deviation 〈2. The limits of detection are 0.1 ng μL−1 and 5 pg μL−1 respectively for Cl3-PCB and Cl8-PCB congeners. In the separation of PCBs from the chlorinated pesticides tested in this work, only the Aldrin is adsorbed for 60% with the PCBs by the NH2 Sep-Pak cartridge. The method described is rapid, simple and reproducible.

Notes: Summary Gas chromatography of chlorinated pesticides in water is carried out after adsorption of a 50 mL sample using a cartridge containing 100 mg CN-bonded porous silica and extraction with 500 μL pentane. The average recovery for eight organochloride pesticides at 1 ppb was 〉95%. The procedure described is simple, selective and reproducible.

Notes: Summary A headspace gas chromatographic method for determination of traces of ethylene oxide (EO) in sterilized materials has been developed. The method allows the determination of the amount of EO by putting the samples directly into acetonitrile and analysing by means of headspace GC. The procedure described is simple, sensitive, reproducible and linear. The lower limit of detection is 0.015 μg/g of sterilized material.

Notes: Summary PLOT columns have been prepared with kaolin as the liquid phase support. These columns show good efficiency with different stationary phases and good thermal stability with polar phases. The performance of columns is shown by the separation of various mixtures such as fatty acids, phenols and anilines which are of analytical importance.

Notes: Summary The possibility of using capillary columns for both sampling and gas chromatographic analysis of aqueous micropollutants has been studied. Factors influencing gas chromatographic band dispersion of the solute were investigated and a mathematical relationship developed correlating the properties (ID, df) of the capillary columns to the degree of dispersion of adsorbed substances has been derived. The experimental results obtained with aqueous samples are in good agreement with the theoretically forecast data. The method developed allows gas chromatographic dosing of traces of organic substances, reducing inconvenience deriving from excessive sample handling to a minimum. Non-refocusing of the analyte does not, in any significant way, compromise column efficiency for substances that are not very soluble in water.

Notes: Summary By connecting capillary columns of different polarity in series and by changing the temperature program gradient, a system of variable polarity is obtained. The working conditions can be adjusted to optimize separations of complex mixtures. Application to the analysis of essential oils of: lavender, thyme, lemon petit grain, bergamot, and tangerine, are reported.

Notes: The catalytic reaction of 1-ethynylcyclohexan-1-ol (EC) in the presence of bisphosphine nickel(II) complexes yields a linear trimer. The trimer could be isolated and characterized by means of MS, IR and NMR spectroscopies. The reaction mechanism is also discussed.
