Notes:
Summary 1. An investigation was carried out concerning the biologic activity of the pituitary gland of Lampetra fluviatilis L. during the spawning migration in autumn and during spawning time in the following spring. 2. The glandular tissue of the adenohypophysis shows a characteristic pattern of chromophil and chromophobic cells; the pattern varies within the three parts of the lobe: a) The proadenohypophysis shows cyanophil and chromophobic cells. Only small amounts of the secretion of the cyanophil cells are set free during the upstream migration in autumn; during spawning time, however, large amounts are set free by mero- and holocrine secretion. It probably contains a gonadotrophic factor. The chromophobic cells are to be considered an independent cell type, the function of which is uncertain. b) Cyanophil, carminophil and chromophobic cells are found in the mesoadenohypophysis. The cyanophil cells are active during the anadromous migration; they are inactive during spawning time. It is most likely that they produce the thyreotropic hormone. The secretory pattern of the chromophobic cells during migration corresponds to the quantity of adrenocorticotropic hormone needed. Towards spring time, part of the chromophobic cells are tranformed into carminophil cells. There is no evidence that the somatotropic hormone is produced by these cells. c) The dominating cell type in the metaadenohypophysis are aldehyde fuchsinophil cells which stain with azocarmine; their secretion is delivered in the vessels between metaadenoand neurohypophysis; it is almost completely exhausted by the time the spawning period begins. There is no evidence for a relation between this secretion and the melanophoren-stimulating hormone. Scattered cyanophil cells are found regularly in this part of the pituitary gland. abetIntracellular colloid is found in the pro- and metaadenohypophysis; its relation to the granular cellular product remains to be determined. 3. Cysts, found regularly in the adenohypophysis, seem to be due to parasites. The parasites could, however, not be demonstrated. 4. There are no differences in the neurosecretory system of the hypothalamus of animals which are caught in spring to those caught in autumn. Three different types of secretion are described: a) Gomori-positive secretion is abundant in the neurohypophysis; it is also demonstrable in the neurosecretory nuclear areas and in the region of the neurosecretory pathway. The ependymal cells may play a part in the derivation of the neurosecretion from the neurohypophysis. b) Homogeneous secretory bodies are found in the distal part of the neurosecretory pathway; they are Gomori-negative and acid fuchsinophil. Only part of this secretion reaches the neurohypophysis; the bulk is “dissolved” earlier and secreted into blood or spinal fluid. The secretion is compared to the phloxinophil neurosecretion of the teleosteans. c) A PAS-positive substance of unknown origine which stains with aniline blue is to be regarded as neurosecretion; it is found in the ventrolateral parts of the commissura praeinfundibularis above the rostral part of the mesoadenohypophysis. 5. Areas of contact between the neurosecretory system and the glandular epithelium of the adenohypophysis are observed in the rostral part of the commissura praeinfundibularis just above the proadenohypophysis, as well as in specialized areas between metaadeno- and neurohypophysis.
