Notes: Summary Theories of hydraulic fracturing of wells are usually based upon a model of a well in which the latter is assumed to be equivalent to an infinitely long cylinder. In this fashion, the stress state induced by the pressure in the well turns out to be two-dimensional. This is certainly an oversimplification, and therefore a different model is proposed in the present paper. In this, we assume that the pressure in the well is equivalent to a spherical pressure center. The fracture condition is formulated and the model is applied to the calculation of underground stresses from well data.

Notes: Summary An isallo stress analysis of the fracture field in the area of Larderello, Italy, is carried out. Some of the general implications of the theory are discussed, and the local geological features of the area are briefly outlined. ThePHS direction is chosen on the basis of additional structural information. The inferred results are in satisfactory agreement with those expected from field geology, and a tentative attempt to a unitary explanation of the origin of the fracture field is made upon this basis.

Notes: Summary This paper is a further one in the series presenting applications of isallo stress analysis to the investigations of the tectonic stresses in various areas of the world. Specific areas in Tanzania (near the East African Rift Valley), in Texas and in Alaska are investigated and a discussion of the tectonic stresses prevalent therein is given.

Notes: Summary The paper reviews the models which have been advocated in the literature for the description of flow through porous media. Special emphasis is placed on statistical models which aim at a theoretical explanation of the occurrence of dispersive effects. These models are a random walk model and new random-topology models.

Notes: Summary The theory of the formation of marine terraces is studied. A model is set up which is believed to describe the physical processes involved. This model leads to a nonlinear partial differential equation which is integrated for some special cases by means of a digital computer. Asymptotic solutions of the differential equation are also found by direct analytical means. It is found that no terraces can develop if eustatic changes occur at a constant rate, contrary to some contentions that have been advanced in the literature.

Notes: Summary This paper discusses a class of stochastic models of flow through porous media in which the randomness is attached to the structure of the medium rather than to the flow path. These models are obtained by generalizing an earlier model available in the literature where a regular ‘crystal’ was taken in which bonds (flow channels) were dammed in a random fashion, yielding a ‘random maze’. The hydraulic properties of general models of this type are calculated; in particular, it is shown that they exhibit the phenomenon of dispersion whereby the factor of dispersion turns out to be a linear function of the percolation velocity.

Notes: Abstract The bedrock surface of many glaciated areas is obscured by thick drift deposits. In southern Ontario, Canada, the buried bedrock surface is dissected by channels, infilled with glacial deposits as much as 150 m thick, that are part of a wider mid-continent “preglacial” fluvial system that predates formation of the modern Great Lake basins. The infills of bedrock channels form major groundwater aquifers, influence regional groundwater flows and contaminant migration to Lake Ontario, and may localize the release of thermogenic methane and radon within heavily urbanized surface environments. A quantitative comparison of the regional pattern of bedrock joints and the orientation pattern of buried bedrock channels and modern river valleys shows that all these orientation patterns are virtually coincident. Buried bedrock channels in south-central Ontario are not part of a simple antecedent drainage system but were likely “predesigned” by bedrock joint patterns that have subsequently been propagated upward into overlying Pleistocene sediments. Joints in sediments are of considerable environmental significance (for example, subsurface contaminant and gas migration in fine-grained clayey sediments) and of many origins (stress release, desiccation, etc.) but are widely assumed to be a predominantly surface-related phenomena; the existence of deeper joints has been noted by some authors but their origin is obscure. Data presented herein from south-central Ontario confirm that, in addition to surface-related joints, a second population of bedrock-related joints, reflecting the upward propagation of bedrock fractures, is present in Pleistocene sediments of south-central Ontario.

Notes: Sedimentologists have noted that turbidite sequences become thinner bedded and finer grained as traced downcurrent. We provide a semi-quantitative explanation of this behavior based on the idea that turbulence in a turbidity current decays downcurrent so that in its zone of deposition both the total load in suspension and the grain size of that load decrease with increasing distance from the source. Semi-empirical equations proposed by Chézy, Lokhtin and Sundborg are central to our argument.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An attempt was made to obtain indications of the present-day geotectonic stresses in Austria from records of hydraulic fracturing operations in oil wells. Inasmuch as only the course of the well-head pressure was available and no data regarding the rock formations were known, it was only possible to determine the smallest principal pressure value for eight different holes. The values found range between 63 and 94 per cent of the overburden pressure. This corresponds to values normally found in the world and Austria is thus recognized as a normal intraplate region.

Notes: Summary Sufficient data on joint orientations in the general region of Eastern North America have now been accumulated for a global picture to emerge. As is well known, the preferred joint orientations can be calculated for a region by a statistical maximum likelihood procedure and the directions of the principal neotectonic stresses can be inferred there-from. For the individual regions investigated, the postulated stresses are in conformity with those expectable from plate-tectonic theory. In the large-scale picture, the most startling characteristic is the indication of an E-W unconformity in the stress-orientation just below a latitude of 40°N.
