Notes: Summary Dilute (0.1M) solutions of HCN condense to oligomers at pH 9.2. Hydrolysis of these oligomers yields 4,5-dihydroxypyrimidine, orotic acid, 5-hydroxyuracil, adenine, 4-aminoimidazole-5-carboxamide and amino acids. These results, together with the earlier data, demonstrate that the three main classes of nitrogen-containing biomolecules, purines, pyrimidines and amino acids may have originated from HCN on the primitive earth. The observation of orotic acid and 4-aminoimidazole-5-carboxamide suggests that the contemporary biosynthetic pathways for nucleotides may have evolved from the compounds released on hydrolysis of HCN oligomers.

Notes: Abstract Fluorescence and lasing properties of coumarindoped silica samples prepared by sol-gel process were investigated. Superradiant emissions at peak power as high as 7MW were measured at around 535 nm when the silica samples were excited by a XeF laser. The energy of the superradiant pulse was 89 mJ, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 36.6%.

Notes: [Auszug] The meteorite sample used for this study was prepared by removing the outer surface and reducing the interior piece to a fine powder with a mortar and pestle. A hot water extract of a 2-g sample was obtained by refluxing for 20 h with 6 ml of water. After centrifuging, the supernatant and ...

Notes: One Irish woman in 14 develops breast cancer. There are 1700 new cases each year. These rates compare poorly with EU figures. The government indicated in 1995 that it favoured rapid, comprehensive diagnostic facilities, using the triple assessment model of clinical care, to improve survival rates and to diminish the anxiety women experience about breast cancer. Implementation of this policy was delayed until 1999, when a plan for centres of excellence in breast care was conceived. To compliment this plan, the Department of Health and Children wanted consumer views on existing breast care services. The Women’s Health Council was asked by the Department of Health and Children, through the National Cancer Forum, to conduct research on women’s views and reactions as consumers of existing services for symptomatic breast disease. The research team was asked to document women’s views on: diagnostic services; counselling; additional treatment services such as surgery and radiotherapy. The methodology consisted of four strands: questionnaires and focus groups with consumers of breast care services; postal questionnaires to clinic staff and a literature review. Striking aspects were the long delays women experienced before obtaining a completed diagnosis; often chaotic clinic settings which added greatly to women’s shock and anxiety; the lack of support if they received a diagnosis of cancer; and problems relating to limited resources for cancer treatment, including radiotherapy. We explored women’s coping mechanisms and their experiences, in the context of the model of quality of care. Finally, we argue that a centre of excellence must develop a multidimensional model of breast disease care that incorporates the full range of psycho-social dimensions for women, if it is to earn its claim to excellence.

Notes: An integral method is developed in order to solve approximately the governing equations for a multitemperature, nonequilibrium ionizing, compressible boundary layer. This method is based on classical momentum and energy integral methods which are used in conjunction with the Howarth–Dorodnitsyn transformation. A novel feature of this method is the separate treatment of the translational or sensible energy equations for each species. As an illustrative example, this method is applied to the problem of a shock-generated ionizing argon boundary layer on a flat surface at a uniform temperature. Reasonable agreement for this case is found between this approximate theory and existing experimental and numerical results.

Notes: The integral method developed in a companion paper [Phys. Fluids 31, xxx (1988)] is extended and applied in this work, to include electromagnetic body forces. A nonequilibrium ionizing argon boundary layer in an electric rocket thruster known as a magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thruster is studied. The steady boundary layer flow of a two-temperature plasma adjacent to the electrode in a self-field MPD thruster is analyzed for both frozen (zero ionization rate) flow and nonequilibrium (finite ionization rate) flow. The free-stream boundary conditions for this analysis are obtained from the results of an earlier quasi-one-dimensional nonequilibrium theory. The ionizing, two-temperature, compressible boundary layer equations with electromagnetic effects are solved using momentum and energy integral methods. This integral method without any electromagnetic effects has been described in the companion paper [Phys. Fluids 31, xxx (1988)]. This enables an approximate calculation of the wall shear and the heat transfer to the electrode. The most significant result of the two-temperature boundary layer theory presented herein is to show the strong dependence of the viscosity on the ionization slip (i.e., ionization fraction at the wall). This affects such relevant quantities as boundary layer thickness, wall shear, and wall heat flux, which in turn influence viscous drag and electrode erosion.
