    Notes: Abstract Average data for igneous and/or metaigneous rocks and soils from seven lunar sites are presented. There are compositional similarities between Apollo 11 and Luna 16 eastern maria, Ap 12 and 15 western maria and between Ap 16 and L 20 highlands. Subtle differences do exist between the paired mare sites and the two highland sites and striking differences between the eastern and western maria. Chondritic normalized REE (rare earth element) patterns for igneous rocks and soils from all sites range from 7-350 generally with negative Eu anomalies. Anorthositic gabbroes to anorthosites, presumably highland material, exhibit a positive Eu anomaly. The REE patterns or Sr isotopic ratios suggest two lava flows each for the L 16 and Ap 14 sites, at least four lava flows for the Ap 11 and 12 site and about six for the Ap 15 site. Paucity of lunar andesites suggests rather limited lunar chemical differentiation. Norite-KREEP is a prominent component at Ap 12, 14 and 15, less at Ap 11 and 16 and L 16 and apparently very low at the L 20 highland site. Derivation of lunar soils can be best explained using multi-component mixing systems. Characterization of meteoritic impacting bodies is also observed in addition to a steady state veil of 1.9% carbonaceous Cl like material in soils. Interelement correlations impose constraints on the primitive composition of the Moon and on magmatic processes like selective volatilization.

    Notes: Abstract Magnetite/liquid distribution coefficients have been calculated that are consistent with observed variations in contents of V, Sc, Cr, and Ti in lavas from Craters of the Moon lava field, Idaho. In particular, our average distribution coefficient for V (27±8) is in close agreement with that determined experimentally at the temperature and oxygen fugacity appropriate for crystallization of these lavas. Although this value is not very precise, it shows that V contents of at least some calcalkaline series are consistent with generation of andesitic and related magmas from basaltic parental magmas by crystal fractionation, involving removal of appreciable amounts of magnetite.

    Notes: Abstract This investigation describes five Mesozoic dolerite dikes which intrude Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Inner Piedmont of western South Carolina. The dikes are vertical or nearly so and strike approximately N40° W. Three major northeast-trending faults also occur in the study area. Left lateral displacement of one dolerite is documented at a locality near Cleveland, South Carolina. Elsewhere, several of the dolerite dikes appear to terminate at or near the faults. — The dolerite dikes have subophitic to microporphyritic textures and consist principally of plagioclase (generally An70–80), olivine (dominantly Fo80–90) and augite with subordinate pigeonite, titanomagnetite, chromite and brown, partly glassy mesostasis. In one dike pyroxene compositions trend from augite to ferroaugite in contrast to an augite→subcalcic augite→pigeonite trend characteristic of the other dolerites. The contrasting trends primarily result from differences in SiO2 abundance in the dolerite magmas. — Major and trace element analyses indicate the presence of two different olivine-normative dolerite magma types. The two magma types are not related by near surface crystal fractionation. Models for genesis of the olivine-normative dolerite magmas by partial melting of a plagioclase peridotite upper mantle source region are presented. The models require that the source region be enriched in LREE and incompatible elements such as Rb, Ba, Hf and Th relative to Cl chondritic abundances. One magma type appears to represent a primary dolerite magma that ascended from the source region with little subsequent compositional change. The second magma type most likely experienced assimilation of clinopyroxene-garnet (eclogite) during ascent, thereby acquiring a REE pattern with a less steep negative slope for the LREE and a slight positive slope in the HREE.

    Notes: Abstract Sodium contents in seven mixtures of biological materials from varying aliquants of wheat flour and oyster tissue were analyzed using the INAA (instrumental neutron activation analysis) method. The samples were activated in the thermal column (TC) of the 1 MW TRIGA reactor at our laboratory. To analyze and compare the measured results, the ratioa of the epithermal neutron flux to the thermal neutron flux was determined in the TC, the rotating rack (RR) and the pneumatic terminal (PT). Due to the negligible interferences of24Mg(n, p)24Na and27Al(n, α)24Na to23Na(n, γ)24Na, the Na results were obtained with ≥97% accuracy and 99% precision. It is shown that the method is suited for accurately determining Na contents in 12 various biological materials, especially for the samples that are low in Na content. From the cadmium ratio measurements of Au (4.9 eV resonance of198Au) and Sm (8 eV resonance of153Sm), ratios ofa≡Φe/Φ0 were determined at 0.0011, 0.052 and 0.053 in the TC, RR and PT activation positions, respectively.
