    Description: Fluctuations in oxygen (d18O) and carbon (d13C) isotope values of benthic foraminiferal calcite from the tropical Pacific and Southern Oceans indicate rapid reversals in the dominant mode and direction of the thermohaline circulation during a 1 m.y. interval (71-70 Ma) in the Maastrichtian. At the onset of this change, benthic foraminiferal d18O values increased and were highest in low-latitude Pacific Ocean waters, whereas benthic and planktic foraminiferal d13C values decreased and benthic values were lowest in the Southern Ocean. Subsequently, benthic foraminiferal d18O values in the Indo-Pacific decreased, and benthic and planktic d13C values increased globally. These isotopic patterns suggest that cool intermediate-depth waters, derived from high-latitude regions, penetrated temporarily to the tropics. The low benthic d13C values at the Southern Ocean sites, however, suggest that these cool waters may have been derived from high northern rather than high southern latitudes. Correlation with eustatic sea-level curves suggests that sea-level change was the most likely mechanism to change the circulation and/or source(s) of intermediate-depth waters. We thus propose that oceanic circulation during the latest Cretaceous was vigorous and that competing sources of intermediate- and deep-water formation, linked to changes in climate and sea level, may have alternated in importance.

    Description: Oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios were measured from Maestrichtian benthic and planktonic foraminifer species and bulk carbonate samples from ODP Sites 689 and 690, drilled on the Maud Rise during Leg 113. Careful scanning electron microscope observations reveal that test calcite in some intervals was diagenetically altered, although Sr/Ca and isotopic ratios of these tests do not appear to have been modified significantly. Foraminifer d18O values at both sites document a cooling trend during early Maestrichtian time, a rapid drop in water temperatures at the time of the first appearance of Abathomphalus mayaroensis in the high southern latitude regions (about 69.9 Ma), and lower water temperatures during late Maestrichtian time. d13C values record a depletion in 13C in the latest early Maestrichtian time beginning at about 72.2 Ma, just prior to the sharp late Maestrichtian increase in d18O values. These trends are similar to those previously reported for well-preserved benthic foraminifer species from Seymour Island, in the Antarctic Peninsula. Paleotemperature estimates are also comparable to those at Seymour Island and suggest temperate climatic conditions in Antarctica and that bottom waters in the southern South Atlantic region were of Antarctic origin. Benthic and planktonic foraminifer 613C values fluctuate sympathetically and are higher in upper Maestrichtian sediments than in the lower Maestrichtian sequence.

    Description: This contribution summarizes the biostratigraphy of planktonic foraminifers, calcareous nannofossils, and benthic foraminifers, in combination with the magnetostratigraphy, carbon and oxygen isotope stratigraphy of benthic foraminifers, and CaCO3 stratigraphy for the Maestrichtian through Paleogene calcareous sequences recovered at Sites 689 and 690 on Maud Rise (at about 65°S, eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica). These data represent the southernmost calciumcarbonate record available for that interval, and thus extend the biostratigraphic and isotopic database to higher latitudes. Sites 689 and 690 form the southernmost anchor of a north-south transect through the Atlantic Ocean for Paleogene biostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy.

    Description: Lower Miocene through upper Pleistocene benthic foraminifer assemblage records from Ocean Drilling Program Site 751 on the Southern Kerguelen Plateau (57°44'S, water depth 1634 m) were combined with benthic and planktonic foraminifer oxygen and carbon isotope records and high-resolution CaCO3 data from the same site. Implications for the Neogene productivity and paleoceanography of the southern Indian Ocean are discussed. We used distinctive features of the Miocene d18O and d13C curves for stratigraphic correlation. Coinciding with a lower middle Miocene hiatus from 14.2 to 13.4 Ma, there was a rapid increase in benthic d18O values by 1.2 per mil. This distinct increase occurs in middle Miocene benthic foraminifer oxygen isotope curves from all oceans. No major change, however, in benthic foraminifer faunal composition occurred in this period of growth of the Antarctic ice cap and cooling of deep ocean waters (14.9-14.2 Ma). A drastic change in benthic foraminifer faunas coincided with a hiatus from 8.4 to 5.9 Ma. Shortly after this hiatus, in the latest Miocene, the CaCO3 content of the sediments dropped from 75% to 0%. From that time ( 5.8 Ma) through the early Pliocene, Site 751 has been situated beneath a high biogenic siliceous productivity zone. Carbonate contents of upper Pliocene and Pleistocene sediments vary between 20% and 70%. The benthic foraminifer faunas in the uppermost Pliocene and lower Pleistocene reflect strong bottom current conditions, in contrast to those in the upper Pleistocene, which indicate calm sedimentation and high food supply. High d13C values of planktonic foraminifers compared with low values of benthic foraminifers suggest high primary productivity in the late Pleistocene. The changes in productivity were probably a result of latitudinal migration and meandering of the Polar Frontal Zone.

    Description: In low and middle latitudes, the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary is marked by a sudden and pronounced decrease in d13C values of near-surface-water carbonates and a reduction in the surface-to-bottom d13C gradient. These isotopic data have been interpreted as evidence of a decline in surface-water productivity that was responsible for the extinction of many planktic foraminiferal species and other marine organisms at or near the K/T boundary. We present planktic and benthic foraminiferal isotopic data from two almost biostratigraphically complete sections at Ocean Drilling Program Site 738 in the antarctic Indian Ocean and at Nye Kløv in Denmark. These data suggest that planktic carbonate d13C values in high latitudes may not have decreased dramatically at the K/T boundary; thus, surface-water productivity may not have been reduced as much as in low and middle latitudes. Comparison of the records of Site 738 with those of ODP Sites 690 and 750 indicates a pronounced decline in d13C values of planktic and benthic foraminifera and fine-fraction/bulk carbonate ~200 000 yr after the K/T boundary. This reflects a regional shift in the carbon isotopic composition of oceanic total dissolved carbon (TDC) and correlates with a similar change in benthic foraminiferal d13C values at mid- and low-latitude Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 527 and 577. This oceanographic event was followed by the ecosystem's global recovery ~500 000 yr after the K/T boundary. These data suggest that the environmental effects of the K/T boundary may have been less severe in the high-latitude oceans than in tropical and subtropical regions.
