Description / Table of Contents: Differential geometry is a very active field of research and has many applications to areas such as physics and gravity, for example. The papers in this book cover a number of subjects which will be of interest to workers in these areas. It is hoped that the papers here will be able to provide a useful resource for researchers with regard to current fields of research in this important area.

Notes: An interpolation technique which is based on the strongly and weakly correlated cases of the one-dimensional Hubbard model is proposed. The input information consists of the perturbation expansions which are obtained from the Lieb–Wu equations in both limits. The Hubbard model is used to describe cyclic polyene rings, and for the case of N=6 sites, this would correspond to benzene. The technique has been applied to several symmetries of the model. It has been shown that the exact secular problem can be reconstructed for these symmetries, and the results for N=6 agree exactly with the results which have been obtained in a different way, that is, by using a full configuration interaction calculation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The Yang–Mills system of field equations which includes coupling to an SU(2) scalar matter doublet is developed. It is shown that an SU(2) current for a scalar matter doublet can be developed. The basic structure which fits the Yang–Mills system is somewhat different from the case of the scalar triplet. Using this form for the scalar current, it is possible to write down the Yang–Mills system which couples to the scalar matter doublet. It is shown that several sets of solutions to this system of equations can be obtained.

Notes: Abstract A derivation of a pair of Maxwell equations which is based on the concept of a Poisson structure on a manifold is given. The idea is geometric in character, and is extended to a generalized algebra. The special case of the dynamics for a particle in a Yang-Mills field is obtained as a consequence of the generalized case.

Notes: Abstract The inverse problem of Poisson dynamics isreviewed as well as a derivation of the Maxwellequations from a postulated set of Poisson brackets. Theformalism is extended to the relativistic case bypostulating Poisson brackets, as in the nonrelativisticcase, and using the relativistic Hamiltonian. A systemof relativistic equations of motion is obtained, and itis indicated that a system of consistency conditions remains valid in this limit.

Notes: Abstract The question as to whether a given set of equations, which govern the dynamical evolution of a system, determine a Lagrangian is considered. This problem, which has come to be known as the inverse problem of the calculus of variations, is reviewed and theorems which contain systems of partial differential equations which determine a type of self-adjointness are developed. It is shown that, given a reasonable form for the classical correspondence, the usual quantum commutator brackets can be expressed in terms of classical quantities which satisfy a particular form of these equations.

Notes: Abstract The quantum group structure of SU q (2) is described. The property of quasi triangularity and the Yang-Baxter equation are reviewed. A universalR-matrix for this algebra is written down. It is then shown in detail that this R-matrix satisfies the triangularity equations of Drinfeld and the Yang-Baxter equation given the algebraic SU q (2) commutation relations. In physical terms, the group can be realized as theq-rotator. A specific physical application to diatomic molecules is presented.

Notes: The calculation of molecular integrals is extremely important for applications to such diverse areas as statistical mechanics and quantum chemistry. A careful derivation of a method for calculating primitive Gaussian integrals originally proposed by Obara and Saika is presented. The basic recursion relations for the two- and three-center overlap integrals is derived using a simple technique. Several new horizontal recursion relations are given. Finally, an innovative method for implementing these recursion relations is discussed. The recursion relations in this form are suited for programming using a symbolic manipulation language. There are several reasons why it is of interest to consider programming with symbolic manipulation. It has been found that it is possible to write algorithms that will generate values for Gaussian integrals for very large values of angular momentum automatically. Calculations can be done to arbitrary precision in Maple. Having these recursions programmed in Maple allows for the possibility of using the Maple programs to help in the writing of similar programs in other languages which are, numerically, much faster. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
