Summary Everywhere in nature and in the vicinity of the earth's crust there is a substance to be found from which a light blue fluorescence is emanating when it is exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Until now this substance has been verified in the atmosphere and in all the manifestations of water, viz. in fog, snow, rain, soft rime, glacier ice, springs, brooks, rivers, lakes, and in the surface water and deep water of the oceans. Besides, the presence of this substance has been proved in dust, rocks and in filter paper (pure cellulose) and it has been revealed as a permanently attendant substance of carbon hydrates frequently occurring in nature. It is precipating to a considerable extent within a few days from the atmosphere on cleaned glass surfaces. From careful experiments it appears to be probable that the fluorescent substance is based on two organic compounds that are spontaneously springing by self-condensation from the dissociated constituents of carbonhydrates (metyhlglyoxal) that are slowly forming everywhere in nature. Similar to the related process of the formation of melanoidin (Maillard-reaction) and in addition to the increase in temperature and concentration of the initial substances (as e.g. is observed during the process of evaporation of atmospheric water drops), alkaline reaction and especially the presence of nitrogen compounds (ammonium-ion, amino-acids) are promoting the formation of fluorescent substances.
