Description / Table of Contents:
Testing anodized aluminium in accelerated and natural weathering testsThe weathering resistance of anodized aluminium is based on sufficient coating thickness and good sealing. The minimum coating thickness required depends from the aggressivity of the surrounding medium (gaseous contaminants, atmospheric moisture, solid airborne particles such as soot, dust or salt). The resistance under accelerated testing conditions can be projected to the effective behaviour under natural conditions because the “apparent conductivity” as found under accelerated weathering is a good resistance criterion: the higher the apparent conductivity, the -poorer the resistance to the atmosphere. Exceptions characterized by a combination of high apparent conductivity and high corrosion resistance can be explained in terms of the fast ageing of partially sealed oxide coats. For this reason it is advisable in evaluating the corrosion behaviour to take account of the ageing behaviour, too. Coloured anodic coating are characterized by exceptionally good weathering resistance, also under marine conditions.
Notes:
