Description / Table of Contents: Plate tectonics provide a unifying conceptual framework for the understanding of Phanerozoic orogens.More controversially, recent syntheses apply these principles as far back as the Early Archaean. Manyancient orogens are, however, poorly preserved and the processes responsible for them are not well understood. The effects of processes such as delamination, subduction of oceanic and aseismic ridges, overridingof plumes and subduction erosion are rarely identified in ancient orogens, although they have a profoundeffect on Cenozoic orogens. However, deeply eroded ancient orogens provide insights into the hiddenroots of modern orogens. Recent advances in analytical techniques, as well as in fields such as geodynamics, have provided fresh insights into ancient orogenic belts, so that realistic modern analogies can nowbe applied. This Special Publication offers up-to-date reviews and models for some of the most importantorogenic belts developed over the past 2.5 billion years of Earth history.

Description / Table of Contents: The supercontinent-cycle hypothesis attributes planetary-scale episodic tectonic events to an intrinsic self-organizing mode of mantle convection, governed by the buoyancy of continental lithosphere that resists subduction during the closure of old ocean basins, and the consequent reorganization of mantle convection cells leading to the opening of new ocean basins. Characteristic timescales of the cycle are typically 500 to 700 million years. Proposed spatial patterns of cyclicity range from hemispheric (introversion) to antipodal (extroversion), to precisely between those end members (orthoversion). Advances in our understanding can arise from theoretical or numerical modelling, primary data acquisition relevant to continental reconstructions, and spatiotemporal correlations between plate kinematics, geodynamic events and palaeoenvironmental history. The palaeogeographic record of supercontinental tectonics on Earth is still under development. The contributions in this Special Publication provide snapshots in time of these investigations and indicate that Earth's palaeogeographic record incorporates elements of all three end-member spatial patterns.

Description: The melanocortin-3 receptor–deficient (MC3-R−/−) mouse exhibits mild obesity without hyperphagia or hypometabolism. MC3-R deletion is reported to increase adiposity, reduce lean mass and white adipose tissue inflammation, and increase sensitivity to salt-induced hypertension. We show here that the MC3-R−/− mouse exhibits defective fasting-induced white adipose tissue lipolysis, fasting-induced liver triglyceride accumulation, fasting-induced refeeding, and fasting-induced regulation of the adipostatic and hypothalamic-adrenal-pituitary axes. Close examination of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis showed that MC3-R−/− mice exhibit elevated nadir corticosterone as well as a blunted fasting-induced activation of the axis. The previously described phenotypes of this animal and the reduced bone density reported here parallel those of Cushing syndrome. Thus, MC3-R is required for communicating nutritional status to both central and peripheral tissues involved in nutrient partitioning, and this defect explains much of the metabolic phenotype in the model.

Description: 〈span〉The evolution of the mantle source beneath a terrane is recorded by the Sm-Nd isotopic systematics of mafic rocks over extended periods of time. The evolution of the mantle beneath the Variscan massifs of continental Europe is tracked in order to examine the coupling between the crust and underlying continental lithospheric mantle during the late Paleozoic Variscan orogeny. Late Neoproterozoic and early Paleozoic (Cambrian–Devonian) extension-related mafic rocks have ε〈sub〉Nd〈/sub〉(〈span〉t〈/span〉) values similar to depleted mantle and so were probably derived from juvenile mantle sources. Thus, weak deformation and low-grade metamorphism associated with the ca. 540 Ma Cadomian orogeny did not change the mantle source beneath the Variscan massifs. In contrast, late Carboniferous–Permian mafic magmatism, which erupted in the aftermath of the collision between Gondwana and Laurussia, is characterized by negative ε〈sub〉Nd〈/sub〉(〈span〉t〈/span〉) values and significantly older depleted mantle model ages (T〈sub〉DM〈/sub〉 = 1800–800 Ma), suggesting derivation from a lithospheric mantle contaminated by late Paleozoic subduction. This characteristic is shared by most Variscan massifs, and it is consistent with the vast tracts of allochthonous peri-Gondwanan terranes exposed within the orogen, which suggest regional crust-mantle decoupling during Variscan collision. The regionally extensive Cenozoic European Volcanic Province has higher ε〈sub〉Nd〈/sub〉(〈span〉t〈/span〉) values (+5 to +7) and significantly lower T〈sub〉DM〈/sub〉 ages (ca. 500–100 Ma), suggesting that the continental lithospheric mantle was refertilized.〈/span〉
