    Description / Table of Contents: Fractured bedrock aquifers have traditionally been regarded as low-productivity aquifers, with only limited relevance to regional groundwater resources. It is now being increasingly recognised that these complex bedrock aquifers can play an important role in catchment management and subsurface energy systems. At shallow to intermediate depth, fractured bedrock aquifers help to sustain surface water baseflows and groundwater dependent ecosystems, provide local groundwater supplies and impact on contaminant transfers on a catchment scale. At greater depths, understanding the properties and groundwater flow regimes of these complex aquifers can be crucial for the successful installation of subsurface energy and storage systems, such as deep geothermal or Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage systems and natural gas or CO2 storage facilities as well as the exploration of natural resources such as conventional/unconventional oil and gas. In many scenarios, a robust understanding of fractured bedrock aquifers is required to assess the nature and extent of connectivity between such engineered subsurface systems at depth and overlying receptors in the shallow subsurface.

    Description: 〈p〉Hard rocks, including crystalline igneous, metamorphic and strongly cemented sedimentary and carbonate rocks cover about 50% of the earth's land surface (〈i〉Singhal and Gupta, 2010〈/i〉). Globally, the volume of groundwater contained in hard rock aquifers is not well constrained (〈i〉Comte et al., 2012〈/i〉), but locally they can be important aquifers (〈i〉MacDonald et al., 2012〈/i〉), albeit with low groundwater storage and poor primary porosity and permeability. Groundwater flow in these hard rocks is commonly observed to be associated with water bearing discontinuities, such as fractures, joints and faults (〈i〉Berkowitz, 2002; Mazurek, 2000; Font-Capo et al., 2012〈/i〉) and in the weathered regolith (〈i〉Wright 1992, Chilton and Foster 1995; Deyassa et al., 2014)〈/i〉. Structural elements such as fault zones also strongly govern the behaviour of these systems (〈i〉Forster and Evans, 1991; Lopez and Smith, 1995, Bense et al., 2013〈/i〉). The nature, abundance, orientation and connectivity of these water-bearing features are largely governed by the history and nature of structural deformation of the bedrock and commonly impose strong anisotropic flow and transport parameters on these bedrock aquifers (〈i〉Hsieh et al., 1985; Bour and Davy, 1997; Mortimer et al., 2011〈/i〉).     Description: 〈p〉Groundwater pathways and residence times are controlled by aquifer flow and storage properties, which, in weathered/fractured hard rock aquifers, are characterized by high spatial heterogeneity. Building on earlier work in a metamorphic aquifer in NW Ireland, new clay mineralogy and analyses of geophysical data provided high spatial resolution constraints on the variations in aquifer properties. Groundwater storage values derived from magnetic resonance sounding and electrical resistivity tomography were found to largely vary laterally and with depth, by orders of magnitude. The subsequent implementation of hillslope, two-dimensional numerical groundwater models showed that incorporating heterogeneity from geophysical data in model parametrization led to the best fit to observations compared with a reference model based on borehole data alone. Model simulations further revealed that (1) strong spatial heterogeneity produces deeper, longer groundwater flow paths and higher age mixing, in agreement with the mixed sub-modern/modern ages (mostly 〈/p〉

    Description: 〈p〉The metamorphic basement units of the Upper Ouémé watershed in Benin have been investigated to identify the structural controls on aquifer properties, groundwater flow and water balance at large scale. Spatial analysis of borehole and hydrogeophysical data suggests that large-scale weathering profiles, aquifer transmissivity and storage properties are better correlated to a palaeo-weathering surface. Multi-model analysis, combined with assessment of nine transient numerical groundwater models against observations, suggests the best conceptualizations are those where hydraulic conductivity and specific yield are distributed within a weathered zone determined through interpolation of weathered zone thickness. When compared to previous studies, the general groundwater balance of simulated models suggests the groundwater system contributes, on average, 49.8 m〈sup〉3〈/sup〉 s〈sup〉–1〈/sup〉 to the river flow (mostly during the rainy season). The same volumetric flow would be lost to groundwater evapo-transpiration and deep/lateral drainage of the catchment. Borehole abstraction (about 7.5 m〈sup〉3〈/sup〉 s〈sup〉–1〈/sup〉) represents only 6% of the average groundwater recharge and 1% of the average rainfall. This suggests that despite relatively low borehole productivity, the basement aquifer system still has an important unused potential for rural to mid-scale water supply and that, at present, the main external drivers for groundwater resource sustainability are changes in climate and land use.〈/p〉

    Description: Due to the duality in terms of (1) the groundwater flow field and (2) the discharge conditions, flow patterns of karst aquifer systems are complex. Estimated aquifer parameters may differ by several orders of magnitude from local (borehole) to regional (catchment) scale because of the large contrast in hydraulic parameters between matrix and conduit, their heterogeneity and anisotropy. One approach to deal with the scale effect problem in the estimation of hydraulic parameters of karst aquifers is the application of large-scale experiments such as long-term high-abstraction conduit pumping tests, stimulating measurable groundwater drawdown in both, the karst conduit system as well as the fractured matrix. The numerical discrete conduit-continuum modeling approach MODFLOW-2005 Conduit Flow Process Mode1 (CFPM1) is employed to simulate laminar and non-laminar conduit flow, induced by large-scale experiments, in combination with Darcian matrix flow. Effects of large-scale experiments were simulated for idealized settings. Subsequently, diagnostic plots and analyses of different fluxes are applied to interpret differences in the simulated conduit drawdown and general flow patterns. The main focus is set on the question to which extent different conduit flow regimes will affect the drawdown in conduit and matrix depending on the hydraulic properties of the conduit system, i.e. conduit diameter and relative roughness. In this context, CFPM1 is applied to investigate the importance of considering turbulent conditions for the simulation of karst conduit flow. This work quantifies the relative error that results from assuming laminar conduit flow for the interpretation of a synthetic large-scale pumping test in karst.
