Notes: The microstructures of magnetite containing vanadium and titanium, found in Sichuam province, China, have been studied by high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The [110] structural images showed a multiply intimate intergrowth of magnetite and coulsonite as a result of exsolution along the [110] direction instead of the [111] direction as reported previously. The detectable different contrast of the two phases was confirmed by image simulation. The antiphase domain and various stacking faults related to the nonstoichiometry of the transitionmetal oxide in the same direction were also observed in magnetite and coulsonite, respectively. The possible genetic aspect and formation of these defects on exsolution are also considered.

Notes: A pluripotent cell line, sea bream embryonic stem-like cells (SBES1), was developed from blastula-stage embryos of the cultured red sea bream, Chrysophrys major. The SBES1 cells were cultivated in Dulbecco's modified eagles medium (DMEM) medium supplemented with foetal bovine serum, marine fish serum, fish embryo extract, selenium, basic fibroblast growth factor and leukemia inhibitory factor. They were small and round or polygonal, and grew actively and stabely in culture. The cells exhibited a positive alkaline phosphatase activity upon histochemical staining. When the cells were treated with all-trans retinoic acid, they differentiated into various types including neuron-like, neuroglia-like and muscle-like cells, suggesting that the SBES1 cells remained pluripotent in culture. Chromosome analysis revealed that SBES1 cells had a normal diploid karyotype with 2n = 2st + 46t. At present, SBES1 cells have been cultured for 〉180 days with more than 60 passages. High survival rate has been obtained after cryopreservation of cell cultures. This embryonic cell line may potentially be used for the production of transgenic red sea bream.

Notes: Structural changes on and near surfaces of ZnTe crystals were observed by the surface profile imaging method in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) with 200 kV accelerating voltage. It was found that ZnO particles form under electron irradiation on surfaces originally covered with a thin amorphous layer. For amorphous coverages thicker than about 7 nm, ZnO particles were not observed. Under the ZnO particles, 2×1 and 2×2 superstructures (about 10 nm in size) were often found in the ZnTe matrix. These superstructures can be described as a metastable Zn2Te3 having a structure similar to the ordered Ga2Te3 structure. This change can be accomplished by considering the diffusion of zinc from the ZnTe matrix to the surface to form the oxide and evaporation of tellurium out of the surface, leaving behind a matrix with an altered stoichiometry. The HRTEM computer-simulated images for the proposed Zn2Te3 superstructure matched very well the experimental images. The 2×1 and 2×2 superstructures corresponded to the HRTEM images of the new Zn2Te3 structure viewed along its [211] and [100] directions, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have found that phase transformation can occur in cobalt when subjected to ball milling. The two modifications of cobalt, i.e., face-center-cubic (fcc) and hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phases, which usually coexist at room temperature and are often difficult to be separated from each other, can now be easily separated by using the simple ball milling technique. The phase formation of cobalt was found to depend on the mill intensity. Under different mill intensity or different milling time, the phase transformations follow the routes of hcp+fcc→hcp, hcp+fcc→hcp→fcc+hcp, and hcp+fcc→hcp→fcc+hcp→fcc, respectively. Our results indicate that the phase formation of cobalt induced by ball milling was determined by the accumulation of structure defects. Different mill intensity may adjust the rate and level of the accumulation of defects. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The microdiffraction from a single translation domain boundary (TDB) in β-Ni3Nb has been recorded by using a Hitachi HF-2000 field emission gun transmission electron microscope, while high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images were used to assist the analysis. The diffraction splitting effect of a TDB is well explained by the kinematics and dynamic calculations, and complex diffraction characteristics have been studied by using dynamics simulation.

Notes: The microstructures of natural ilmenite found in Panzhihua district, China, were examined by high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The [{\bar 1}2{\bar 1}0] structural images showed clearly the (10{\bar 1}1) nonbasal twinning which seems to be coincident with the [{\bar 1}012] rotation twinning. The superlattices with periodicities of 16.8 and 12.6 Å, respectively, as well as the unit-cell twinning related to the ordering of (10{\bar 1}1) multiple twinnings were observed. The superlattice resulting from the ordering arrangement of (10{\bar 1}1) stacking faults related to the slip systems suggested by Heuer [Philos, Mag. (1966), 13, 379–893] were also detected. Possible genetic aspects are considered.

Notes: High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron diffraction were used to investigate the microstructure of natural lead oxides found in Panzhihua Mountain, China. The electron diffraction patterns showed crossing of diffraction spots along 〈110〉 directions in litharge and along 〈100〉 directions in massicot and the structural images showed the domain-like texture, probably constructed by arrays of planar defects in the fundamental structures. Based upon the structure of these oxides the possible structural models of planar defects are discussed and the orientation relationship of litharge and massicot is determined.
