Notizen: Abstract This paper reports an empirical discovery in integer programming. A version of the branch-and-bound approach is used as a control and tested against the same algorithm augmented by the use of Hillier's linear search performed at every node of the search tree. It is shown that the imbedded linear search locates solutions within 1%, and solutions within 5% of the theoretical optimum, which in fact can be seen to have this proximity to the theoretical optimum at the time of termination of computation, over ten times faster than the control.

Notizen: Abstract For convex optimization inR n,we show how a minor modification of the usual Lagrangian function (unlike that of the augmented Lagrangians), plus a limiting operation, allows one to close duality gaps even in the absence of a Kuhn-Tucker vector [see the introductory discussion, and see the discussion in Section 4 regarding Eq. (2)]. The cardinality of the convex constraining functions can be arbitrary (finite, countable, or uncountable). In fact, our main result (Theorem 4.3) reveals much finer detail concerning our limiting Lagrangian. There are affine minorants (for any value 0〈θ≤1 of the limiting parameter θ) of the given convex functions, plus an affine form nonpositive onK, for which a general linear inequality holds onR nAfter substantial weakening, this inequality leads to the conclusions of the previous paragraph. This work is motivated by, and is a direct outgrowth of, research carried out jointly with R. J. Duffin.

Notizen: Abstract Any optimization problem in a finite structure can be represented as an integer or mixed-integer program in integral quantities. We show that, when an optimization problem on an unbounded structure has such a representation, it is very close to a linear programming problem, in the specific sense described in the following results. We also show that, if an optimization problem has such a representation, no more thann+2 equality constraints need be used, wheren is the number of variables of the problem. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a functionf:S→Z, withS $$ \subseteq $$ Z n , to have a rational model in Meyer's sense, and show that Ibaraki models are a proper subset of Meyer models.

Notizen: Abstract We show that duality gaps can be closed under broad hypotheses in minimax problems, provided certain changes are made in the maximum part which increase its value. The primary device is to add a linear perturbation to the saddle function, and send it to zero in the limit. Suprema replace maxima, and infima replace minima. In addition to the usual convexity-concavity type of assumptions on the saddle function and the sets, a form of semireflectivity is required for one of the two spaces of the saddle function. A sharpening of the results is possible when one of the spaces is finite-dimensional. A variant of the proof of the previous results leads to a generalization of a result of Sion, from which the theorem of Kneser and Fan follows.

Notizen: Abstract We consider integer programs in which the objective function and constraint matrix are fixed while the right-hand side varies. The value function gives, for each feasible right-hand side, the criterion value of the optimal solution. We provide a precise characterization of the closed-form expression for any value function. The class of Gomory functions consists of those functions constructed from linear functions by taking maximums, sums, non-negative multiples, and ceiling (i.e., next highest integer) operations. The class of Gomory functions is identified with the class of all possible value functions by the following results: (1) for any Gomory functiong, there is an integer program which is feasible for all integer vectorsv and hasg as value function; (2) for any integer program, there is a Gomory functiong which is the value function for that program (for all feasible right-hand sides); (3) for any integer program there is a Gomory functionf such thatf(v)≤0 if and only ifv is a feasible right-hand side. Applications of (1)–(3) are also given.
