    Notes: Sensory and instrumental measures were made of the edibility characteristics of 18 fish species from the families Lutjanidae and Scorpaenidae. Descriptive sensory analysis and cluster analysis of the data showed Lutjanidae and Scorpaenidae families to differ in texture, but not in flavor. Lutjanidae species were less flaky, less fibrous, less firm, and less chewy than the Scorpaenidae species. Only Atlantic Ocean Perch (Sebastes marinus), Longspinethornyhead (Sebastolobus altivelis), and Shortspinethornyhead (Sebastolobus alascanus), were more similar in texture to the Lutjanidae species than to their own family, Scorpaenidae. Consumer data revealed a similar separation of family groups on the basis of texture, but not flavor. Sensory and instrumental data showed good correlations between both sensory hardness and chewiness and the instrumental parameter of maximum shear stress (r = 0.86 and 0.84, respectively).

    Notes: Specimens of fresh and cooked fish fillets of a variety of species were compressed by an Instron Universal Testing Machine. The output, converted to true stress-strain relationships, revealed an initial linear portion up to 20-40% strain. This enabled the calculation of the modulus of deformability from the slope. The curve continuation was concave upwards in raw specimens, most likely because of the development of hydrostatic pressure. In cooked specimens the continuation was mostly concave downward, possibly an indication of structural disintegration. Variations in the calculated moduli were large along the same fillets and among fillets of the same species.

    Notes: Abstract The chloroplast adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase is located in the thylakoid membrane and synthesizes ATP from adenosine diphosphate and inorganic phosphate at the expense of the electrochemical proton gradient formed by light-dependent electron flow. The structure, activities, and mechanism of the chloroplast ATP synthase are discussed. Emphasis is given to the inherent structural asymmetry of the ATP synthase and to the implication of this asymmetry to the mechanism of ATP synthesis and hydrolysis. A critical evaluation of the evidence in support of and against the notion that one part of the enzyme rotates with respect to other parts during catalytic turnover is presented. It is concluded that although rotation can occur, whether it is required for activity of the ATP synthase has not been established unequivocally.

    Notes: Prescribed burns are increasingly being used in ecological restoration and vegetation management. Despite the accumulation of scientific information on fire behavior and fire effects, however, in many cases fires are prescribed without consideration of such information and often simply because of evidence of past fires. Rather than basing fire management plans on ideas of the historical “natural” occurrence of fire, we present the case for fire management being based on the fire effects desired. Effective fire management and development of proper fire prescriptions require an understanding of fire processes and heat transfer that explain fire behavior characteristics, as well as an understanding of how fire behavior is coupled to specific fire effects. We provide a basic introduction to these concepts and processes, which will help in understanding the importance of having a more technical understanding of fire. The discussion includes the processes of heat transfer and the relative role of various fuel variables in these processes, as well as the concepts of fire intensity, rate of spread, fuel consumption, duff consumption, fire frequency, and the ecological effects associated with variation in these characteristics of fire behavior.

    Notes: A theoretical framework for the design of asymmetrically doped n-type n-i-p-i- superlattices for subband detector applications in the 10 μm spectral range is described. Excellent agreement is found with the subband absorption spectra measured in a series of GaAs n-type n-i-p-i- samples and oscillator strengths, transition energies, and dipole matrix elements comparable with conventional quantum-well heterostructure detectors are found. Pronounced IR-absorption modulation by optical pumping with band-gap radiation is seen, due to the enhanced interband recombination time resulting from the type-II n-i-p-i- potential. The prospective advantages of n-type n-i-p-i- devices for the detection and modulation of 10 μm radiation are discussed.
