    Description / Table of Contents: INTRODUCTION Ecometry concerns measurements and interpretation of ecological data and relationships between data. It deals with most matters involved in the scientific aspects of the representativity and information value of samples and does not, in fact, concern statistical methods. In particular, ecometry can be regarded as an approach to obtain so-called load models and load diagrammes (effect-dose-sensitivity diagrammes), which are one of the aims/final products in aquatic environmental consequence analysis (H~- kanson, 1990; all these terms will be explained later on). This publication is meant to demonstrate what can and cannot be done using ecometric approaches. It must be emphasized at the outset that the main intention here is not to provide new radioecological knowledge on how Cs-137 is dispersed in aquatic ecosystems after the Chernobyl accident and is taken up in fish, but to use Cs-137 as a type substance and pike as a biological indicator to go through methods which should also apply to other types of environmentally hazardous substances (it could just as well have been substance X in ecosystem Y). As a secondary effect, we may also learn something about Cs-137. Several terms and methods, which have not been used earlier in the aquatic environmental sciences, e.g., ecometric analysis and dynamic modelling using moderators, will be discussed and defined...

    Notes: This paper explores the influence of partner selection and the design of contracts and agreements on the chances for a collaborative R&D venture to ‘succeed’. It is based on questionnaire data regarding 49 such ventures undertaken by companies based in four Nordic countries. The age distribution of the sample is taken into account through use of statistical event history analysis, testing hypotheses regarding the determinants of the hazard rate. The results show that prior contacts with prospective partners improve the chances that a cooperation will succeed. Such contacts help prevent difficulties due to differences in corporate culture, inadequate technical capabilities, incongruous strategic intentions, etc. The analysis also suggests that contracts and agreements should avoid detailed specifications of the procedures to be followed during implementation. Such stipulations create problems by reducing the flexibility required in inherently uncertain R&D collaborations. Granting relative resource self-sufficiency and managerial autonomy to the venture organisation improves its chances of success.

    Notes: This paper summarizes the results of in-depth case studies of international R&D management in four Swedish multinational corporations. The results suggest that foreign volumes and shares of R&D expenditures are rapidly increasing. Through a rapidly increasing number of foreign acquisitions, foreign R&D laboratories have been added. As part of international rationalization of production, foreign units have been given global product mandates with responsibility both for manufacturing and R&D. In maturing foreign subsidiaries, routine technical activities have often evolved into proper R&D. Tight labour market conditions for engineers in Sweden have made it increasingly necessary to exploit existing technical capacity, regardless of location.Concurrently, companies face new pressures for international coordination and control of R&D. Coordination is required to reduce product differentiation, to facilitate technology transfer and to ensure the technical and market compatibility of products and components developed at different locations but sold as part of total systems. Drawing on the experience in the four investigated companies, the paper discusses how systems and procedures can be developed to meet the need for coordinated international R&D management.

    Notes: This study demonstrates how a given lake (Lake S. Bullaren, Sweden) would respond to emissions from a fish cage farm. The main questions to be answered are: How would emissions of feed spill and faeces from a fish farm influence the production and biomass of key functional organisms and how long would such changes remain if the fish farm is closed down? The work is based on a comprehensive lake ecosystem model, LakeWeb, which accounts for production, biomass, predation, abiotic/biotic interactions of nine key functional groups of organisms, phytoplankton, bacterioplankton, two types of zooplankton (herbivorous and predatory), two types of fish (prey and predatory), as well as zoobenthos, macrophytes and benthic algae. The LakeWeb model gives seasonal variations (the calculation time is one week). It has been calibrated and critically tested using empirical data and regressions based on data from many lakes. These tests have demonstrated that the model can capture typical functional and structural patterns in lakes very well, lending credibility to the results presented in this study. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first time that effects from fish cage farm emissions on lake ecosystem structure have been quantified at the ecosystem scale. To carry out studies such as these in the traditional manner, by extensive field work in one or a few lakes, would be very demanding, in terms of costs, personnel and time. This work has demonstrated that fish farm emissions would cause significant increases in the biomass of wild fish, without corresponding increases in algal volume. Thus, it is concluded that the fish farm emissions influence the lake's secondary production more markedly than primary production. Although this finding might seem to be a paradox, it is related to the fact that wild fish directly consume food spill and faeces from the fish farm, thereby creating a specific foodweb pathway, as described in this study.

    Notes: The paper reports a study of the post-acquisition integration process in three foreign acquisitions made by Swedish multinationals. Detailed interview data and questionnaire responses in both acquiring and acquired firms are presented. The sub-processes of task integration and human integration are separated out and it is shown that effective integration in these cases was achieved through a two-phase process. In phase one, task integration led to a satisficing solution that limited the interaction between acquired and acquiring units, while human integration proceeded smoothly and led to cultural convergence and mutual respect. In phase two, there was renewed task integration built on the success of the human integration that had been achieved, which led to much greater interdependencies between acquired and acquiring units.

    Notes: The aim of this work is to link physical sediment parameters to biological parameters by an equation of state, which describes how the given variables interact in biologically active deposits from accumulation areas, i.e. lake areas where fine material is being continuously deposited. In the model the following parameters are utilized: sediment depth, rate of deposition, degree of compaction, bulk density, water content, net biotransport, upward biotransport, downward biotransport, and substrate decomposition. The equation of state has been empirically tested with data from Lake Ekoln and Lake Vänern, Sweden. The model enables determinations of age frequency distributions for arbitrary sediment layers, and it has been shown that, for example, the sediment layer 12-13 cm in Lake Ekoln has a median age of 15.3 years and that the deposits from the median year only constitutes about 15% of the total amount of material in this particular sediment layer. The spread due to bioturbation is considerable and the range at this sediment layer is 22 years. A mechanism to explain secondary lamination is introduced and discussed in the light of the results from the model.

    Notes: Internal loading has long been regarded as an ‘Achilles heel’ in aquatic science and management. Internal loading is of fundamental importance in large and shallow lakes, where even low wind velocities can cause a considerable resuspension of matter deposited on the lake bed. The resuspended matter, and the chemical substances bound to the resuspended matter, will influence almost all processes in the aquatic ecosystem, such as water clarity and depth of the photic zone, and hence, primary and secondary production. If the sediments are contaminated, it will increase the concentrations of harmful substances in water and sediments and the potential ecosystem effects related to such concentrations. This paper presents an overview of the processes regulating bottom dynamic conditions in lakes (erosion, transport, accumulation), provides examples on the role of internal loading within the context of limnology and water management, and presents a new, general approach to quantify internal loading from sediments in lakes. The new approach has been critically tested, being a key factor behind the increase in predictive power of a new generation of lake models meant to be used for practical water management. Internal loading of any water pollutant depends on sedimentation. Sedimentation in this approach is presented as a function of two substance-specific variables, including the fall velocity of the carrier-particles and the particulate fraction (which, by definition, is the only fraction of a water pollutant that can settle out on the lake bed), and three generic variables, including mean depth, suspended particulate matter and ET-areas (areas of erosion and transport). On ET-areas there is, by definition, a discontinuous sedimentation of materials that settles according to Stokes' law. Basically, internal loading is the sum of advective (resuspension) and diffusive transport from the sediments. Resuspension from ET-areas is given as a function of the lake form (a new algorithm based on the volume development) and the age of ET-sediments.
