    Notes: The magnetization reversal in two metal-evaporated samples for magnetic recording, which display a strong out-of-plane anisotropy, has been studied by means of magneto-optic Kerr vector magnetometry, a technique that allows for the determination (in three dimensions) of the magnetization vector direction as a function of the external field. One sample is a single CoNiO thin film and the other is composed by three CoNiO layers. The results of the vector magnetometry analysis indicate that the magnetization of the two CoNiO samples rotates coherently out-of-plane, without domains formation, until the external field reverses and reaches a critical value Hcr. The comparison and the detailed analysis of the results allowed us to evidence the different degree of coherency of the magnetic switching in the two samples investigated and to relate it to their different structure. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new calibration procedure for determining the instrumental efficiency of a grating-based inverse photoemission spectrograph is described. Our results are in good agreement with those obtained by following another procedure previously adopted by other authors. The new procedure is particularly convenient for inverse photoemission experiments conducted in the so-called "isochromat'' mode.

    Notes: The influence of the element shape on the switching of the magnetization in dot arrays has been investigated using a joint in-field magnetic force microscopy analysis and magneto-optical Kerr measurements. The single- or multiple-domain nature of the magnetization at remanence is shown to depend strongly on the aspect ratio of the elements and on how rounded or pointed each element is. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have monitored the structural evolution of Co(tCo)/Cu(4×tCo) multilayers when tCo ranges from 12 to 2 Å. The investigation has been performed by studying their magnetization and giant magnetoresistance, since these properties are complementary in providing information about the structure of the magnetic species into the samples. In particular, in the intermediate range of thickness, we observed no correspondence between magnetic and magnetoresistive behavior. Finally, at sufficiently low thickness, the samples exhibit noninteracting superparamagnetic features. This kind of evolution has been ascribed to the progressive fragmentation of Co layers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The temperature dependence of coercive field and of the ratio between the remanent and saturation magnetization of granular Co/Cu films grown by sequential sputtering has been studied with magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements in the temperature range 8.5–60 K. The observed temperature dependence of coercive field does not fit any of the plausible Tx laws commonly used to describe systems of single-domain ferromagnetic particles. We worked out a generalized model, which also includes temperature effects related to nonuniform single-domain particle size distribution. The model predictions account well for the observed temperature behavior of both coercive field and ratio between the remanent and saturation magnetization. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This letter presents a method for determining the orientation of the magnetization vector during the reversal process in ferromagnetic films using a conventional setup for magneto-optical ellipsometry based on the photoelastic modulation technique for the modulation of polarization. The orientation is obtained through the determination of three orthogonal reduced (i.e., normalized to saturation value) magnetization components as a function of the external field. Test measurements on a reference sample are also presented, which confirm the reliability of the measurements and show what kind of information can be retrieved. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have studied the effects of surface crystallization on the magnetic properties of Fe80B20 amorphous alloys. The surface magnetic properties have been studied with magneto-optic Kerr measurements, while those of bulk with a vibrating sample magnetometer. This study reveals that surface crystallization is similar to the bulk process but occurs at a lower temperature. At variance with previous results on other iron-based amorphous alloys the surface crystalline layer does not induce bulk magnetic hardening. Furthermore, both the remanence to saturation ratio and the bulk magnetic anisotropy do not show appreciable variations after the formation of the surface crystalline layer. The Curie temperature of the surface layer is lower with respect to the bulk of the sample. These effects can be explained by a lower boron concentration in the surface region of the as-cast amorphous alloy. Measurements of the chemical composition confirm a reduction of boron concentration in the surface region. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report a study relating the evolution of coercivity Hc, both in the bulk and in the surface region, to the microstructural changes occurring during the first stage of the crystallization process of Fe80B20 amorphous samples. The coercive field Hc has been studied with a magneto-optical Kerr ellipsometer in the surface and with a vibrating sample magnetometer in the bulk. The observed behavior of Hc can be accounted for by considering its dependence on the number density of grains and gives information on the domain wall dynamic indicating the occurrence of a two dimensional bending of the domain walls. In addition, the evolution of Hc is substantially insensitive to the details of the internal structure of the grains. This study reveals that the surface crystallization occurs via the same processes as in the bulk but it takes place at lower temperature with respect to the bulk. We also measured the Curie temperature of the surface region of the amorphous ribbon and we obtained a lower value with respect to the bulk. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report a study of the evolution of coercivity (Hc) in partially crystallized Fe80B20 samples with an increasing number of crystallites obtained in a controlled way into ferromagnetic amorphous matrix. These samples allow to test existing models for interaction of domain walls with defects since it is possible to change only the number density of crystallites without modifying their dimensions. We observe that the evolution of Hc is mainly related to the nucleation frequency of grains and quite independent from their internal structure. The observed behavior of Hc can be accounted for by considering the dependence of coercivity on the number density of pinning sites and by assuming a two-dimensional bending of the domain walls during their motion. Moreover our results indicate that the changes occurring to the intergranular phase during annealing do not appreciably affect coercivity in the partially crystallized samples. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
