Description: SUMMARY On 2009 April 6 a M w = 6.3 earthquake struck the Abruzzi region (Central Italy) and caused severe destruction in L’Aquila and the surrounding area. In this work we present a Finite Element analysis of the event based on a realistic complex 3-D model, accounting for topographic relief and rheological heterogeneities deduced from local tomography. Finite Element computed Green's functions were implemented in a linear inversion of GPS coseismic displacements, to retrieve the slip distribution on the rupture plane. The inverted slip models basically agree with previous studies carried out on homogeneous domains, but reveal the presence of a single high slip patch, whereas half-space or 1-D approaches obtain a more complex slip pattern. Our results point out that the introduction of 3-D features significantly influences the obtained source model, suggesting a trade-off between domain complexities and source details.

Notes: Abstract Novel poly(etheraroyl-co-terephthal)hydrazides with liquid crystalline (LC) behaviour, synthesized by solution polycondensation followed by non-solvent coagulation in water, have been characterized by means of Fourier Transform infrared (FT-i.r.), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) techniques. DSC thermograms and WAXS intensity profiles of “as polymerized” and coagulated homo- and copolymers are strongly dependent upon the molecular structure and constitution of the polymers: the poly(etheraroyl-hydrazide) homopolymer shows an LC behaviour and such a characteristic is maintained in copolymers with low content of terephthaloyldichloride comonomer, while a further increase in comonomer content attenuates this LC attitude. Annealing treatments on “as polymerized” and coagulated copolymers are able to transform the LC phase “metastable at room temperature” into crystalline and/or amorphous phases.

Notes: Abstract  Hoxb-5 is one of the few homeobox genes strongly expressed in the developing mouse lung. To explore the hypothesis that Hoxb-5 acts to regulate epithelial cell fate and branching morphogenesis in the developing lung, we studied the temporal, spatial, and cell-specific expression of Hoxb-5 from gestational day (d) 13.5 to postnatal day (P) 2. Immunocytochemistry demonstrated regional localization of Hoxb-5 protein to developing conducting airways and surrounding mesenchyme. The cellular expression pattern changed from diffusely positive nuclei of mesenchymal cells on d13.5 to become more localized to nuclei of subepithelial fibroblasts and some adjacent columnar and cuboidal epithelial cells on d14.5. After d14.5, Hoxb-5 protein expression continued to decrease in mesenchymal cells distal from developing airways, but persisted in fibroblasts underlying conducting airways. Hoxb-5 protein expression persisted in nuclei of columnar and cuboidal epithelial cells on d16.5 and d17.5, with expression in low cuboidal epithelial cells as well from d17.5 to P2. Western blot analysis showed temporal and quantitative changes in Hoxb-5 protein expression with peak expression on d14.5–15.5. We conclude that Hoxb-5 protein is developmentally regulated in a temporal, spatial, and cell-specific manner throughout the pseudoglandular, canalicular, and terminal saccular periods of lung development in the mouse. This localization and expression pattern suggests that Hoxb-5 may influence branching morphogenesis, cell–cell communication, cell fate, and differentiation of conducting airway epithelia.

Notes: Abstract The influence of an elastomeric second-phase on the kinetics of the curing reaction and the gel-time of a standard unsaturated polyester resin, by using the isothermal and dynamic techniques of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a thermocouple was investigated. In particular we examined two different rubbers (polybutadiene hydroxyl-terminated and polybutadiene isocyanate-terminated), that, in the presence of polyester resins, affect the overall curing reaction kinetics in two ways: the former reduces the rate of reaction whilst the latter increases it.

Notes: Abstract Reaction injection moulding of blend samples of poly(β-hydroxybutyrate-co-β-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) has been performed in the presence of peroxide. The blends are compared to mechanical PHBV/PCL blends obtained in the absence of peroxides. Differences in chemical physical and mechanical properties are interpreted on the basis of intergrafted species present in the peroxide-treated blends. The obtained blends are proposed as versatile materials for applications for bioresorbable prostheses.

Notes: Abstract New formulations of rubber toughening agents for difunctional and tetrafunctional commercial epoxies are attempted, on the basis of their increased thermal stability compared with classical unsaturated elastomers. Quite satisfactory results are obtained where a block copolymer of polydimethylsiloxane and polyoxyethylene elastomer or a functionalized poly (1 -butene) in difunctional epoxy are used. On the other hand, poor results are obtained when the same elastomers are employed in tetrafunctional epoxies. A tentative explanation is given on the basis of the different networks obtained in the two matrix systems.

Notes: Abstract Recycling of polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) bottles for soft drinks is accomplished by depolymerization through glycolysis. Obtained intermediates are reacted with mixtures of saturated and unsaturated acids to obtain unsaturated polyesters (UP) suitable for use as a matrix for fibre-reinforced thermosetting composites. The influence of chemical structure of glycols on the chemo-rheological behaviour of resins, has been verified. By using di-ethylene glycol, the behaviour of the resulting UP closely resembles that of UP obtained from virgin monomers. Moreover, composite sheets containing UP developed in the present research, show enhanced toughness if compared with the analogous composite made of virgin UP resin.
