Description: We present the first results from Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCAS) observations of the Cygnus Loop. A 22 min square of the north-east rim was observed. The imaging capability of ASCA permits clear indentification of the shock front structure. The energy resolving power of ASCA in the energy band between 0.5 keV to 10 keV reveals several emission lines from oxygen to silicon. The intensity ratio between the O VIII and O VII emission lines demonstrates that the plasma has not reached collisional ionization equilibrium. A nonequilibrium ionization model is applied to determine the gradients both in electron temperature T(sub e), and in electron density n(sub e). T(sub e) ranges from 0.22 keV at the shock front to 0.30 keV at 17 min inside the shock front. n(sub e) can be represented as a power law function of radius with an index of about 6 at an ambient gas density of 0.5 cm(exp -3). The plasma parameter n(sub e)t is about 2 x 10(exp 11) cm(exp -3), resulting in an age of about 20000 yr for the Loop.

Description: This paper reports on a Workshop on Supernova Remnants and the Physics of Strong Shock Waves hosted by North Carolina State University at Raleigh, North Carolina, September 16-18, 1993. The workshop brought together observers, shock theorists, cosmic-ray specialists, and simulators to address the role supernova remnants can play in furthering our understanding of the complex plasma physics associated with collisionless shocks and particle acceleration. Over fifty scientists presented papers on various aspects of supernova remnants. In lieu of a proceedings volume, we present here a synopsis of the workshop, in the form of brief summaries of each workshop session.

Description: This report provides a summary of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) ROSAT SCIENCE DATA CENTER (RSDC) activities for the recent years of our contract. Details have already been reported in the monthly reports. The SAO was responsible for the High Resolution Imager (HRI) detector on ROSAT. We also provided and supported the HRI standard analysis software used in the pipeline processing (SASS). Working with our colleagues at the Max Planck in Garching Germany (MPE), we fixed bugs and provided enhancements. The last major effort in this area was the port from VMS/VAX to VMS/ALPHA architecture. In 1998, a timing bug was found in the HRI standard processing system which degraded the positional accuracy because events accessed incorrect aspect solutions. The bug was fixed and we developed off-line correction routines and provided them to the community. The Post Reduction Off-line Software (PROS) package was developed by SAO and runs in the IRAF environment. Although in recent years PROS was not a contractual responsibility of the RSDC, we continued to maintain the system and provided new capabilities such as the ability to deal with simulated AXAF data in preparation for the NASA call for proposals for Chandra. Our most recent activities in this area included the debugging necessary for newer versions of IRAF which broke some of our software. At SAO we have an operating version of PROS and hope to release a patch even though almost all functionality that was lost was subsequently recovered via an IRAF patch (i.e. most of our problems were caused by an IRAF bug).
