    Description: Colletotrichum species are plant pathogens, saprobes, and endophytes on a range of economically important hosts. However, the species occurring on pear remain largely unresolved. To determine the morphology, phylogeny and biology of Colletotrichum species associated with Pyrus plants, a total of 295 samples were collected from cultivated pear species (including P. pyrifolia, P. bretschneideri, and P. communis) from seven major pearcultivation provinces in China. The pear leaves and fruits affected by anthracnose were sampled and subjected to fungus isolation, resulting in a total of 488 Colletotrichum isolates. Phylogenetic analyses based on six loci (ACT, TUB2, CAL, CHS-1, GAPDH, and ITS) coupled with morphology of 90 representative isolates revealed that they belong to 10 known Colletotrichum species, including C. aenigma, C. citricola, C. conoides, C. fioriniae, C. fructicola, C. gloeosporioides, C. karstii, C. plurivorum, C. siamense, C. wuxiense, and two novel species, described here as C. jinshuiense and C. pyrifoliae. Of these, C. fructicola was the most dominant, occurring on P. pyrifolia and P. bretschneideri in all surveyed provinces except in Shandong, where C. siamense was dominant. In contrast, only C. siamense and C. fioriniae were isolated from P. communis, with the former being dominant. In order to prove Koch’s postulates, pathogenicity tests on pear leaves and fruits revealed a broad diversity in pathogenicity and aggressiveness among the species and isolates, of which C. citricola, C. jinshuiense, C. pyrifoliae, and C. conoides appeared to be organ-specific on either leaves or fruits. This study also represents the first reports of C. citricola, C. conoides, C. karstii, C. plurivorum, C. siamense, and C. wuxiense causing anthracnose on pear.

    Notes: The Na2 4 3Σg+ state dissociates adiabatically to the 3s+4p atomic limit. The vibrational levels of the 4 3Σg+ state below the 3s+3d atomic limit were observed previously by perturbation facilitated optical–optical double resonance (PFOODR) fluorescence excitation spectroscopy. Vibrational levels above the 3s+3d atomic limit are found to be predissociated and transitions into these levels have been observed by detecting atomic Na 3d→3p fluorescence. The predissociation is due to the interaction with the continuum of the 2 3Πg state (direct as well as accidental predissociation via bound vibrational levels of the 3 3Πg state). The potential energy curve of the 4 3Σg+ state has been constructed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of carbon incorporation upon thermal oxidation of Si1−xGex alloys and its role on strain compensation in Si1−xGex alloys. Si1−xGex and Si1−x−yGexCy alloys on Si(100) are grown by combined ion and molecular beam deposition and are then oxidized at 1000 °C in a dry oxygen ambient for two h. The thickness and the composition of all samples before and after oxidation are measured by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) combined with ion channeling at 2.0 MeV and carbon nuclear resonance analysis at 4.3 MeV using 4He++ ions. In agreement with previously reported results of dry oxidation on Si1−xGex thin films, 2.0 MeV RBS analysis shows that a layer of SiO2 is formed on the top surface of both Si1−xGex and Si1−x−yGexCy thin films, while Ge segregates towards the top surface and at the SiO2/Si1−xGex and SiO2/Si1−x−yGexCy interfaces. However, it is observed for the first time that dry oxidation rates of Si1−xGex thin films decrease with increasing Ge fraction x for x(approximately-greater-than)0.20 and with increasing minimum yield. Ion channeling analysis and strain measurements indicate that the incorporation of C rather than the amount of C itself affects the dry oxidation mechanism because of its strong influence on film strain and crystalline quality. These results are discussed in conjunction with observations by secondary ion mass spectrometry, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and tapping mode atomic force microscopy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
