    Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉This study provides a descriptive characterization of the modern sedimentary processes in Lake Issyk Kul, Kyrgyzstan, important for the selection of a suitable coring or deep‐drilling site, interpretation of future core data and applicability of proxies. The quasi‐equidistant sampling grid of 66 sediment surface samples covers the entirety of the lake basin and is complemented by 10 samples from the major inflows. The methodological approach includes geochemical, granulometric, lipid biomarker, diatom, and statistical analyses. The quantitative and qualitative changes in sediment composition yield information on its generic origin and prevailing transport and depositional environments. The composition of the surface sediments in Issyk Kul is highly heterogenous. Nearshore deposition is mainly controlled by wave action and by fluvial sediment supply with highest quantities of detrital input coming from the high‐energetic, eastern tributaries. Sediments in the deep central basin are mainly produced in situ and dominated by authigenic calcite. Biogenic accumulation is overall low, except for the western extremity of the lake, where the nearshore, shallow‐water, and low‐energetic environment favors aquatic productivity and subsequent preservation of organic material and diatoms. Redeposition of sediments is a dominant process along the slopes across the southern and western basin floor, where run‐out distances of mass movement deposits are up to 5 km. Directional sediment transport by lake currents appears to be less important, except for the transport of very fine‐grained organic matter. Biomarker‐inferred temperature reconstructions suggest lake surface temperatures of ∼15°C in the western littoral zone and in Tyup Bay and a decrease to ∼13°C basinward.〈/p〉
    Description: Plain Language Summary: Intensive research on the natural component of climate variability on geological time scales is needed to better understand and validate current and future climate change. Lakes can provide continuous sediment successions that allow us to reconstruct regional trends in climate and environment dynamics far beyond the industrial age. In continental Eurasia, Lake Issyk Kul, one of the deepest and largest mountain lakes in the world, has long been targeted for a deep‐drilling campaign, because its sediment succession potentially holds information of the past ∼10 million years. Prerequisite for future drilling is a better understanding of prevailing transport and (re)deposition mechanisms in Lake Issyk Kul. The overarching aim of this study is to test the applicability of different proxies, vital for the interpretation of future sediment core data. Therefore, a quasi‐equidistant sampling grid of up to 66 sediment surface (and 10 river) samples spanning the entire lake basin of Lake Issyk Kul was examined by means of sedimentological, geochemical, biological, and statistical analyses. The interpretation provides insights into spatial differences in, for example, clastic input from major rivers, biogenic sedimentation, and endogenic precipitation of calcium carbonates.〈/p〉

    Notes: Abstract In summer 1998, a geophysical survey including seismic profilesand electrical tomography has been carried out in the Suusamyr valley, Kyrgyzstan. The scope wasto investigate surface effects induced by the Ms = 7.3 Suusamyr earthquake, the 19th of August, 1992. Inthis paper, special attention is paid to the case study of a debris slide triggered by the earthquake.Seismic data are analysed by P-wave refraction technique and by surface wave inversion. Electrical tomographicprofiles are processed by 2D-inversion. Using geotechnical and geological information, P-velocity modelsand resistivity sections are interpreted in terms of geological materials, in order to build a geological3D model. On the basis of the latter, we carried out static finite element computations as well as staticand pseudo-static calculations with Janbu’s method. Newmark displacement was computed, considering or notthe influence of the shallow soft deposits. The results are compared to the real displacementobserved in the field and conclusions are drawn about the mechanism of the landslide.

    Description: The paper presents a geodynamic interpretation of the deep structure and active tectonics of the northern Tien Shan, with particular emphasis on strike-slip motions, which produced a pull-apart in the centre of the Issyk-Kul basin. The study is based on a detailed interpretation of satellite imagery, fault plane solutions of earthquakes, seismic, and geodetic data. Seismic and magnetotelluric studies show tectonic layering of the Tien Shan lithosphere, with several nearly horizontal viscoelastic layers and the lower layer underthrust northward in the northern Tien Shan. This active process may be responsible for the intricate present-day tectonic framework of the northern Tien Shan. The recent tectonics of the northern Tien Shan inherits the earlier structure: The lens-shaped Issyk-Kul microcontinent comprising Precambrian-Palaeozoic metamorphic and magmatic rocks is surrounded by thick shear zones which have been involved in the activity over most of the Cenozoic. In the Quaternary the strain propagated as far as the central part of the Issyk-Kul basin.

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Summary〈/div〉Interpretation of surface fault scarps and palaeoseismic trenches is a key component of estimating fault slip rates, earthquake recurrence rates and maximum magnitudes for hazard assessments. Often these analyses rely on the assumption that successive earthquakes all breached the surface and that the ruptures are recorded topographically, or by the deposits exposed in a trench. The M〈sub〉〈span〉w〈/span〉〈/sub〉7.2 1992 Suusamyr earthquake, Kyrgyzstan, is an apparently problematic case for such analyses because its ruptures show significant displacement but are only mapped as having broken the surface along small, disparate portions of the fault. Here we present the results of surveys conducted along the Suusamyr Fault to establish whether that is the case. Two sets of ruptures were identified following the earthquake. They are unusually short for their displacement and are separated by a 25 km gap. Using satellite imagery, high-resolution digital elevation models and palaeoseismic trenching we first reassess the distribution of the 1992 ruptures and then reconstruct the Holocene earthquake record to establish the extent to which the 1992 earthquake is representative of the rupture behaviour of this fault. We find evidence for at least two prehistoric surface rupturing earthquakes in the Holocene: one ∼3 ka and one 〉8 ka that, along with the modern event, gives recurrence intervals of ∼3 kyr and ∼5 kyr. Within spatial gaps between segments of the 1992 ruptures there are clear prehistoric surface ruptures and the ruptures in each prehistoric earthquake were discontinuous. We conclude that there is significant variability in the surface rupture pattern of successive earthquakes on the Suusamyr Fault, with implications for the completeness of palaeoseismic records obtained from thrust scarps.〈/span〉

    Description: In this study, we estimate the location and magnitude of Central Asian earthquake from macroseismic intensity data. A set of 2373 intensity observations from 15 earthquakes is analysed to calibrate non-parametric models for the source and attenuation with distance, the distance being computed from the instrumental epicentres located according to the International Seismological Centre (ISC) catalogue. In a second step, the non-parametric source model is regressed against different magnitude values (e.g. M LH , m b , M S , M w ) as listed in various instrumental catalogues. The reliability of the calibrated model is then assessed by applying the methodology to macroseismic intensity data from 29 validation earthquakes for which both M LH and m b are available from the Central Asian Seismic Risk Initiative (CASRI) project and the ISC catalogue. An overall agreement is found for both the location and magnitude of these events, with the distribution of the differences between instrumental and intensity-based magnitudes having almost a zero mean, and standard deviations equal to 0.30 and 0.44 for m b and M LH , respectively. The largest discrepancies are observed for the location of the 1985, M LH  = 7.0 southern Xinjiang earthquake, whose location is outside the area covered by the intensity assignments, and for the magnitude of the 1974, m b  = 6.2 Markansu earthquake, which shows a difference in magnitude greater than one unit in terms of M LH . Finally, the relationships calibrated for the non-parametric source model are applied to assign different magnitude-scale values to earthquakes that lack instrumental information. In particular, an intensity-based moment magnitude is assigned to all of the validation earthquakes.

    Description: On 24 July 2008, a glacier lake outburst flood (GLOF) occurred at the western (w-) Zyndan glacier lake in the Tong District of Ysyk-Köl Oblast, Kyrgyzstan. The flood killed three people and numerous livestock, destroyed infrastructure, and devastated potato and barley crops as well as pastures. Tuurasuu village and a downstream reservoir on the Zyndan river escaped heavy damage because the main flood was diverted toward the Tong river. RTK-GPS and satellite data (Landsat 7 ETM+, ALOS/PRISM, and ALOS/AVNIR-2) reveal that the flood reduced the lake area from 0.0422 km2 to 0.0083 km2, discharging 437 000 m3 of water. This glacier lake was not present in a Landsat 7 ETM+ image taken on 26 April 2008. It formed rapidly over just two and half months from early May to the late July, when large amounts of snow and glacier melt water became trapped in a basin in the glacier terminus area, blocked by temporary closure of the drainage channel through the terminal moraine that included much dead-ice. In the same mountain region, most other glacier-lake expansions were not particularly large during the period from 1999–2008. Although events like the w-Zyndan glacier lake outburst occur infrequently in the high Central Asian mountains, such fast developing, short-lived lakes are particularly dangerous and not easy to monitor using satellite data. Appropriate measures to protect against such lake outburst hazards in this region include educating residents on glacier hazards and monitoring techniques, providing frequently updated maps of glacier lakes, and planning and monitoring land-use, including house locations.
