    Notes: Abstract We have used trace element partitioning data available in the literature to investigate nonideality of the cations of Yb, Sm, Gd, Ca, Mn, Sc, Ni, and Al in silicate melt, olivine, and low-Ca pyroxene. Results are consistent with ordering of Mg and Fe around trace cations in olivine and pyroxene. On the basis of these data, we suggest there is an increasing tendency for Fe to congregate in the vincinity of the trace cation as the size of the trace cation increases. These results are important both in achieving a better understanding of trace element behavior in crystals and in constraining the temperature and compositional dependence of trace element partitioning.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a biometeorological study of ischaemic heart diseases and a thermal load index combining meteorological factors, clothing insulation and metabolic rate. The study is based on records of weather and of hospital admissions. The data were grouped into four seasonal periods approximating the four major climate seasons experienced at Toronto, Canada. Statistical analysis of the seasonal data for five years (1976–1980) shows a good association between the deviations from group averages of the thermal load index and corresponding deviations of the number of patients admitted to hospitals at Toronto due to cardiovascular diseases if two out of nineteen data points are excluded from the analysis. In the authors' view, recognizing the nature of climate and other records, there is good reason to believe that this association is meaningful. The results indicate that at a given activity level and clothing insulation there is a higher incidence of coronorary diseases when the thermal sensation is to the cold side of the neutral comfort condition. Probable causes are advanced for the fact that 12% of the data appear anomalous.

    Notes: Abstract Concern over the effects of human activities on this planet and on it's ecosystems is widespread. Changes wrought within the atmosphere are of particular concern because they have pervasive social, environmental, and economic effects; some potentially serious and very long-term. The problems they pose and the need for remedial measures creates both scientific and policy challenges. This paper bridges the two domains, outlining how the atmosphere is being changed, some of the possible consequences thereof, and actions being taken to address the issue. Emissions to the atmosphere are attacking the stratospheric ozone shield, causing acidification, spreading toxic substances and increasing the greenhouse effect. Of these concerns, the global issue of greenhouse warming will have the greatest overall impact and it the most difficult to address. While some countries have taken important preventative and mitigating measures, action on the greenhouse threat generally has been restrained because of related uncertainties, possible economic upsets and the enormity of the problem. The paper ends by noting recent international initiatives toward development of needed public policies and the roles of the scientist in addressing the issue.

    Notes: Abstract As part of the research programme of the Atmospheric Environment Service, a large, sensitive weighing lysimeter was constructed on the Atmospheric Environment Service research site north of Toronto. Features of the instrument include: measurement of runoff, percolation, drainage of water held in tension, addition of water from below during dry conditions, equalization of soil temperature profile inside with that outside the lysimeter, humidity control to eliminate condensation, low area of discontinuity at the rim to reduce edge effects, and quasimonolith filling. This paper describes the construction and installation of the lysimeter, the problems encountered and some infrequently considered sources of error.

    Description: Little information is available on Canadian tornadoes although from time to time these severe local storms take a serious toll of life and property. A climatology of tornadoes on the Canadian prairies is presented. These storms are most frequent in that area near the junction of the Saskatchewan-Manitoba-North Dakota borders. Compared to American tornadoes, they reach a maximum frequency both later in the day and in the season. A higher percentage move from northwest than is observed in the United States.
