    Description: Ecosystems are capital assets: When properly managed, they yield a flow of vital goods and services. Relative to other forms of capital, however, ecosystems are poorly understood, scarcely monitored, and--in many important cases--undergoing rapid degradation. The process of economic valuation could greatly improve stewardship. This potential is now being realized with innovative financial instruments and institutional arrangements.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Daily, G C -- Soderqvist, T -- Aniyar, S -- Arrow, K -- Dasgupta, P -- Ehrlich, P R -- Folke, C -- Jansson, A -- Jansson, B -- Kautsky, N -- Levin, S -- Lubchenco, J -- Maler, K G -- Simpson, D -- Starrett, D -- Tilman, D -- Walker, B -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2000 Jul 21;289(5478):395-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Biological Sciences, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305, USA. gdaily@leland.stanford.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10939949" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Eastern boundary current systems are among the world's most productive large marine ecosystems. Because upwelling currents transport nutrient-rich but oxygen-depleted water onto shallow seas, large expanses of productive continental shelves can be vulnerable to the risk of extreme low-oxygen events. Here, we report the novel rise of water-column shelf anoxia in the northern California Current system, a large marine ecosystem with no previous record of such extreme oxygen deficits. The expansion of anoxia highlights the potential for rapid and discontinuous ecosystem change in productive coastal systems that sustain a major portion of the world's fisheries.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Chan, F -- Barth, J A -- Lubchenco, J -- Kirincich, A -- Weeks, H -- Peterson, W T -- Menge, B A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2008 Feb 15;319(5865):920. doi: 10.1126/science.1149016.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Zoology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331, USA. chanft@science.oregonstate.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18276882" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Integrated studies of coupled human and natural systems reveal new and complex patterns and processes not evident when studied by social or natural scientists separately. Synthesis of six case studies from around the world shows that couplings between human and natural systems vary across space, time, and organizational units. They also exhibit nonlinear dynamics with thresholds, reciprocal feedback loops, time lags, resilience, heterogeneity, and surprises. Furthermore, past couplings have legacy effects on present conditions and future possibilities.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Liu, Jianguo -- Dietz, Thomas -- Carpenter, Stephen R -- Alberti, Marina -- Folke, Carl -- Moran, Emilio -- Pell, Alice N -- Deadman, Peter -- Kratz, Timothy -- Lubchenco, Jane -- Ostrom, Elinor -- Ouyang, Zhiyun -- Provencher, William -- Redman, Charles L -- Schneider, Stephen H -- Taylor, William W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2007 Sep 14;317(5844):1513-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824, USA. jliu@panda.msu.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17872436" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Global sustainability challenges, from maintaining biodiversity to providing clean air and water, are closely interconnected yet often separately studied and managed. Systems integration-holistic approaches to integrating various components of coupled human and natural systems-is critical to understand socioeconomic and environmental interconnections and to create sustainability solutions. Recent advances include the development and quantification of integrated frameworks that incorporate ecosystem services, environmental footprints, planetary boundaries, human-nature nexuses, and telecoupling. Although systems integration has led to fundamental discoveries and practical applications, further efforts are needed to incorporate more human and natural components simultaneously, quantify spillover systems and feedbacks, integrate multiple spatial and temporal scales, develop new tools, and translate findings into policy and practice. Such efforts can help address important knowledge gaps, link seemingly unconnected challenges, and inform policy and management decisions.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Liu, Jianguo -- Mooney, Harold -- Hull, Vanessa -- Davis, Steven J -- Gaskell, Joanne -- Hertel, Thomas -- Lubchenco, Jane -- Seto, Karen C -- Gleick, Peter -- Kremen, Claire -- Li, Shuxin -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2015 Feb 27;347(6225):1258832. doi: 10.1126/science.1258832.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, USA. liuji@msu.edu. ; Department of Biology, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA. ; Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, USA. ; Department of Earth System Science, University of California, Irvine, CA, USA. ; World Bank, Washington, DC, USA. ; Department of Agricultural Economics, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA. ; Department of Integrative Biology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR, USA. ; School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA. ; The Pacific Institute, Oakland, CA, USA. ; Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25722418" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
