Notes: The Cooper-Nathans formulation of the resolution function of a triple-axis crystal spectrometer for neutron-scattering experiments gives a singular resolution matrix when the scattering angle is small. The origin of this singularity is discussed and an alternative derivation, of the resolution matrix given which avoids this difficulty. The results are illustrated by numerical calculations for several typical experiments showing that resolution corrections may be large and very significant for experiments at small scattering angles.

Notes: The resolution function of an X-ray triple-crystal diffractometer is calculated on the assumption that the resolution is controlled by the properties of the monochromating and analysing crystals. The expressions are then evaluated when these crystals have either a mosaic structure or when they are perfect flat crystals with a reflectivity controlled by the Darwin width. Within the Gaussian approximation for the Darwin curve, simple expressions for the resolution are then obtained both for a conventional X-ray source and for an X-ray synchrotron source, although the expressions differ in detail. The expressions are used to discuss the intensity obtained when a triple-crystal diffractometer is used to measure the integrated Bragg reflection intensity, the intensity associated with rods in reciprocal space and the intensity of diffuse scattering.

Notes: Ho/Y and Ho/Er superlattices have been grown by molecular-beam epitaxy using a Balzers UMS 630 instrument. The superlattices were grown on a sapphire substrate with an Nb buffer and Y seed layer. X-ray-diffraction techniques were used to characterize the crystallographic structure and neutron-diffraction techniques to determine the magnetic structures. The results for the Ho/Y systems were consistent with long-range order being formed coherently through the whole superlattice. The moments in the Ho layers were aligned in the basal plane and most of the structures could be described by helical structures with a turn angle between holmium planes of ΨH and between nonmagnetic Y planes ΨY. ΨY is found to be largely independent of temperature or superlattice, while ΨH decreases with decreasing temperatures and at low temperatures takes a commensurate value, so as to take advantage of the basal plane anisotropy. The results for the Ho/Er superlattices differ because the Er has a magnetic moment and the anisotropy favors alignment along the c axis. Between the ordering temperature of bulk Ho and bulk Er, the results are similar to those of the Ho/Y superlattices. The ordering propagates through the Er layers but the Er moments are not ordered. At lower temperatures the Er moments order in a cycloidal (a/c) structure with the basal plane components having fairly long-range coherence with the Ho moments, but the c-axis components having no coherence from one Er layer to the next.

Notes: The structure of Nb thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy on sapphire has been studied using high-resolution x-ray scattering techniques. Transverse scans of the x-ray wave vector transfer through the (110)Nb Bragg peak show diffuse scattering with a Lorentzian-squared profile, and satellite Bragg peaks for certain orientations of the crystal. The former feature arises from a random, two-dimensional network of Nb domains, and the latter from a periodic distortion of the Nb films at the terrace edges of the vicinal sapphire substrate.

Notes: The resolution function of an X-ray triple-crystal diffractometer on a rotating-anode source has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Three different experimental configurations were used, with perfect germanium, distorted germanium and pyrolytic graphite as monochromator and analyser, leading to changes in the resolution of two orders of magnitude. The results are compared with a Gaussian description of the resolution function and it is found that this describes the width of the central part with an accuracy of better than 25%. The wings of the resolution in the high-resolution mode show the effect of the non-Gaussian resolution elements but these are reproduced by a full numerical convolution theory of the resolution function.

Notes: Expressions are obtained for the intensity distributions which are observed when Bragg reflections are studied using an X-ray multi-crystal diffractometer. The expressions are obtained for both Bragg and Laue geometry at the sample, and assuming that the monochromator, sample and analyser elements are all perfect crystals. Detailed calculations are made of several configurations with both laboratory-based and synchrotron sources, and the results are compared with experimental measurements. The comparison shows that the theory gives reliable results not only for the half-widths of the distributions, but also for the tails of the distributions resulting from the dynamical effects in one or more of the crystals.
