Description: NMDA receptor activation can elicit synaptic plasticity by augmenting conductance of the AMPA receptor GluA1 subsequent to phosphorylation at S831 by Ca2+-dependent kinases. NMDA receptor activation also regulates synaptic plasticity by causing endocytosis of AMPA receptor GluA1. We demonstrate a unique signaling cascade for these processes mediated by NMDA receptor-dependent...

Description: In the present paper, we have focused on the recent coastline changes at the eastern part of the Meghna Estuary of Bangladesh through the application of PALSAR (The Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar) and Landsat images. The area under concern is very dynamic where the combined processes of erosion and accretion take place under the influence of river discharge with heavy sediment load, wind waves and tides. It falls under the macro-tidal zone with tidal range varying from 4 m to 6 m or even higher. Many parts of the area is covered with intertidal mudflats. They are inundated during the high tides and get exposed during the low tides. So for the detection coastline change consideration of tidal phase is quite important which has been done in the present study. Coastline change from the year 2007 to 2013 has been presented in this paper. From the analyses of satellite images the areas of erosion and accretion of the four major offshore islands have been calculated duri...

Description: Ghrelin is a gastric peptide hormone that stimulates weight gain in vertebrates. The biological activities of ghrelin require octanoylation of the peptide on Ser(3), an unusual posttranslational modification that is catalyzed by the enzyme ghrelin O-acyltransferase (GOAT). Here, we describe the design, synthesis, and characterization of GO-CoA-Tat, a peptide-based bisubstrate analog that antagonizes GOAT. GO-CoA-Tat potently inhibits GOAT in vitro, in cultured cells, and in mice. Intraperitoneal administration of GO-CoA-Tat improves glucose tolerance and reduces weight gain in wild-type mice but not in ghrelin-deficient mice, supporting the concept that its beneficial metabolic effects are due specifically to GOAT inhibition. In addition to serving as a research tool for mapping ghrelin actions, GO-CoA-Tat may help pave the way for clinical targeting of GOAT in metabolic diseases.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3068526/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3068526/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Barnett, Brad P -- Hwang, Yousang -- Taylor, Martin S -- Kirchner, Henriette -- Pfluger, Paul T -- Bernard, Vincent -- Lin, Yu-yi -- Bowers, Erin M -- Mukherjee, Chandrani -- Song, Woo-Jin -- Longo, Patti A -- Leahy, Daniel J -- Hussain, Mehboob A -- Tschop, Matthias H -- Boeke, Jef D -- Cole, Philip A -- P01 CA016519/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- P01 CA016519-35/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- P30 DK079637/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- P60 DK079637/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- P60 DK079637-05/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- R01 DK081472/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- R01 DK081472-01A1/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- R01 DK081472-02/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- R01 DK081472-03/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- R01 GM062437/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- R01 GM062437-04/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- R01 GM062437-11/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2010 Dec 17;330(6011):1689-92. doi: 10.1126/science.1196154. Description: One of major challenge in bio-hydrogen production process by using MEC process is nonlinear and highly complex system. This is mainly due to the presence of microbial interactions and highly complex phenomena in the system. Its complexity makes MEC system difficult to operate and control under optimal conditions. Thus, precise control is required for the MEC reactor, so that the amount of current required to produce hydrogen gas can be controlled according to the composition of the substrate in the reactor. In this work, two schemes for controlling the current and voltage of MEC were evaluated. The controllers evaluated are PID and Inverse neural network (NN) controller. The comparative study has been carried out under optimal condition for the production of bio-hydrogen gas wherein the controller output is based on the correlation of optimal current and voltage to the MEC. Various simulation tests involving multiple set-point changes and disturbances rejection have been evaluat...

Notes: Eighteen cultivars of cowpeas (V. unguiculata) were analyzed for cooking time, swelling capacity, leached solid, percent seed coat, seed density, amylose, tannins, proteins, and soluble sugars. The physicochemical characteristics varied with the seed coat color, the hilum color, and the skin texture. The cooking time was positively correlated to protein, seed density, percent seed coat, swelling capacity and leached solids, and negatively correlated to the levels of amylose, soluble sugars and tannins. There were significant correlations (p 〈 0.05) between sugars and swelling capacity, protein and seed density; and seed density and swelling capacity. The mean percent seed coat was significantly different (p 〈 0.05) between the varieties with wrinkled seed coats and those with smooth seed coats.

Notes: Abstract Monthly length-frequency data of green tiger prawns from April 1985 to August 1990 were analyzed to estimate the von Bertalanffy growth curves and related parameters. The mean asymptotic carapace lengths (L ∞) and growth constants (K) over 5 seasons were 36.6 mm and 1.6 yr−1 for males and 51.2 mm and 1.7 yr−1 for females, respectively. Annual total mortality rates (Z) from 1985/86 to 1989/90 ranged from 2.7 to 6.5 yr−1 for males and from 2.8 to 6.8 yr−1 1 for females. The mean exploitation rates calculated using the mean natural mortality rates (M) of 2.5 yr−1 for males and 2.4 yr−1 for females showed that the male green tiger prawns in Kuwait waters were under exploited, whereas the catch of females was very close to the sustainable yield. Chi-square tests indicated that the sex ratio was close to one for adults (CL ≽ 26 mm), but significantly favoured males for recruits (CL 〈 26 mm). A major recruitment was detected from June/July in all seasons and a minor recruitment in some seasons in August/September. The relative yield-per-recruit (Y'/R) reached the optimum at the length-at-first capture (L c) of 25 mm CL for males, and increased as L c increased for females. The observed mean L c, values were 23.4 mm for both males and females. The Y'/R under the current exploitation level is close to the maximum sustainable yield for females, but lower for males. More fishing effort could be exerted to exploit males, but doing so may not be biologically or commercially possible with current trawling practices.

Notes: For the 12-node quadrilateral isoparametric elements, it is shown that the inverse square root singularity of the strain field at the crack tip can be obtained by the simple technique of collapsing the quadrilateral elements into triangular elements around the crack tip and placing the two side nodes of each side of the triangles at 1/9 and 4/9 of the length of the side from the tip. This is analogous to placing the mid-side nodes at quarter points in the vicinity of the crack tip for the quadratic isoparametric elements. The advantages of this method are that the displacement compatibility is satisfied throughout the region and that there is no need of special crack tip elements. The stress intensity factors can be accurately obtained by using general purpose programs having isoparametric elements such as NASTRAN.
