    Notes: We study the quantum dynamics of localized impurity states created by a point interaction for an electron moving in two dimensions under the influence of a perpendicular magnetic field and an in-plane weak electric field. All impurity states are unstable in presence of the electric field. Their lifetimes are computed and shown to grow in a Gaussian way as the electric field tends to zero. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract In addition to being scientifically exciting, commercially important, and environmentally essential, temperate forests have also become a key diplomatic item in international climate negotiations as potential sinks for carbon. This review presents the methods used to estimate carbon sequestration, identifies the constraints and opportunities for carbon sequestration in temperate forests, addresses the issues raised by the monitoring of carbon sequestration, and analyzes uncertainties pertaining to the sequestration of carbon by temperate forests. This review serves a dual purpose: It aims at informing policy makers about carbon sequestration in temperate forests and at making forest ecologists, biogeochemists, and atmospheric scientists aware of the structure of an international agreement to reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions and some of the real, still answered scientific questions that it poses.

    Notes: The effects of the sample temperature on laser induced electron emission of α-SiO2 is discussed. The sample was irradiated using the third harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser, with pulse durations of 30 ps, at intensities in the 109 W cm−2 range, leading to an electron emission due to multiphoton absorption. We measured both the total photocurrent and the photoelectron energy spectrum for temperatures ranging between room temperature and 250 °C. We observed a strong increase of the photocurrent, which is associated with the disappearance of the charging effect due to the holes left by the emission. We interpret this as a result of a thermally induced, trapping/detrapping, electron conductivity. This interpretation is based on the fact that hole conductivity is too small to account for our observations and that intrinsic electron conductivity does not show the correct temperature behavior. The increase of the photocurrent is, however, mainly due to an increase of the defect creation yield with the temperature. From these observations possible applications to the problem of low energy electron spectroscopy on insulating samples are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Vegetation changes both in stationary and changing climates. Such changes can significantly affect hydrological and climate dynamics. Probabilistic, inferential, empirical, statistical, threshold, ecophysiological, and mechanistic vegetation models provide tools and ideas to construct coupled climate and vegetation schemes to study climate/vegetation feedbacks. Their logic is discussed, typical applications are presented, and their usefulness is assessed. Developing coupled climate and vegetation schemes also implies tackling scaling issues explicitly. Just as the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) criterion guarantees that information is not transferred faster through space than time in climate models, information should be transmitted fast enough in vegetation models for the landscape to register vegetation responses. To guarantee that this is the case, a ‘migration criterion’, or ‘m criterion’, is proposed. The CFL criterion and the m criterion set formal constraints on the design of coupled atmosphere and vegetation schemes. In particular, the ratio of climate and vegetation space scales should be approximately five orders of magnitude less than the ratio of climate and vegetation time scales.

    Notes: Abstract We present a method of computing the Coulomb forces on particles in an infinite configuration of charges in one dimension. The resolution of the apparent nonuniqueness in this problem leads to a structural proof of the translation symmetry breaking in jellium, at all temperatures, and to a related phenomenon of phase nonuniqueness in the two component system. The appropriate generalizations of the DLR and KMS conditions for these states are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of dynamic feedback linearization is recast using the notion of dynamic immersion. We investigate here a “generic” property which holds at every point of a dense open subset, but may fail at some points of interest, such as equilibrium points. Linearizable systems are then systems that can be immersed into linear controllable ones. This setting is used to study the linearization of driftless systems: a geometric sufficient condition in terms of Lie brackets is given; this condition is also shown to be necessary when the number of inputs equals two. Though noninvertible feedbacks are nota priori excluded, it turns out that linearizable driftless systems with two inputs can be linearized using only invertible feedbacks, and can also be put into a chained form by (invertible) static feedback. Most of the developments are done within the framework of differential forms and Pfaffian systems.
