Metal Hydrazides, XVIII. Hydrazidolysis of Long Chain 1-Phenyl-1-alkenes with Sodium HydrazideWhereas phenyl alkenes of the type C6H5—CH=CH—[CH2]n-H with n = 0-4 are split to an extent of more than 80% at the olefinic double bond upon warming for 4.5 hours with sodium hydrazide + hydrazine [1 : 2] in ether to 35°C2), the hydrazidolytic cleavage of 1-phenyl-1-alkenes with a longer alkyl residue occurs to a considerably lesser extent (with n = 5, 6, 7 to 41, 9 and 3.5%) or not at all (with n = 11, 17) under the same conditions. Under more rigorous conditions (4.5 hours of warming with sodium hydrazide + hydrazine [1 : 6] in diisopropylether to 55-60°C) the 1-phenyl-1-alkenes with a longer alkyl residue could also be split to a large extent (with n = 5, 7, 11, 17 to 84, 82, 81 and 32%).
Notes:
