    Description: Protecting the world's freshwater resources requires diagnosing threats over a broad range of scales, from global to local. Here we present the first worldwide synthesis to jointly consider human and biodiversity perspectives on water security using a spatial framework that quantifies multiple stressors and accounts for downstream impacts. We find that nearly 80% of the world's population is exposed to high levels of threat to water security. Massive investment in water technology enables rich nations to offset high stressor levels without remedying their underlying causes, whereas less wealthy nations remain vulnerable. A similar lack of precautionary investment jeopardizes biodiversity, with habitats associated with 65% of continental discharge classified as moderately to highly threatened.     Notes: Abstract Freshwater ecosystems in Asia are under grave threat. Large and growing human populations and the rapid pace of development have led to the degradation of natural environments throughout the region. Conservation of freshwater biodiversity faces particular challenges because of a lack of public awareness of its magnitude and importance. Even taxa with high public-relations value, such as fishes, are rather poorly known, and the variety of other animals associated with lakes and riverine wetlands, including charismatic and endangered megafauna, seems to have escaped wide attention. The rate and extent of environmental change in Asia are having impacts on the aquatic biota that may be greater than anywhere else on the planet. Particular threats include water pollution, from point and nonpoint sources, which is almost ubiquitous; overharvest of fishes, turtles, and crocodilians; flow regulation and impoundment of rivers; as well as drainage basin degradation and climate change. Many lakes have been so modified by human activities that they function as enormous fishponds, and the introduction of exotic species (especially, but not only, fishes) or the translocation of native taxa has contributed to the extinction of endemic species in isolated drainage basins. The prognosis is grim, and we can anticipate a loss in biodiversity and homogenization of the regional biota. Reversal of these trends will require a change in focus by limnologists and water-resource managers, and the urgent adoption of a conservation agenda for freshwater science in Asia.

    Notes: Summary The feeding behaviour of four sympatric isopods from a Hong Kong forest has been investigated. The study included two armadillids (Formosillo raffaelei and Orodillo maculatus) and two philosciids (Burmoniscus ocellatus and Burmoniscus sp.). When given a choice of eight types of litter, all isopod species showed significant dietary selection, and food preferences were similar. Berchemia racemosa (Rhamnaceae) was most readily consumed, followed by Celtis sinensis (Ulmaceac), while feeding rates on Cinnamomum camphora (Lauraceae) were low. The armadillids exhibited a narrower dietary spectrum than the philosciids. All isopods showed significant differences in consumption rates when each litter type was presented separately to them. Cinnamomum camphora was eaten the slowest, while Celtis sinensis and Berchemia racemosa were the top-ranked species. Although patterns of litter ranking based on percentage eaten or feeding rates were similar, all isopods ate more food when given a mixture of leaves than when presented with a single litter type. Assimilation rates were, in general, positively related to feeding rates. On this basis, it appears that assimilation may influence food preference. There were no clear relationships between food preference or feeding rates and ash, calcium, copper, soluble tannin or energy content of the litter. This finding may indicate the benefits of isopods maintaining a mixed diet, consuming certain litter species to meet their calcium or copper requirements and then switching to others so as to meet daily energy needs and to avoid excessive injection of tannins or plant allelochemicals.

    Notes: Abstract Laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) is used to measure the flow profile of a Newtonian fluid in a cone-and-plate rheometer. The primary and secondary flow patterns are measured in the ideal geometry. The results confirm prior predictions of flow patterns. Flow profiles are also measured in the misaligned geometry in which the cone axis of rotation is tilted slightly off the perpendicular with the plate surface. Numerical predictions of these flow patterns (Dudgeon and Wedgewood, 1994) are also confirmed.

    Notes: Abstract The method of domain perturbation developed by Joseph is used to calculate velocity and stress profiles in a slightly misaligned cone-and-plate rheometer where the cone is spinning and the plate is stationary. Results for a Newtonian fluid, a Criminale-Ericksen-Filbey fluid, an upper-convected Maxwell fluid, and a White-Metzner fluid are presented and compared with earlier results in which the cone is stationary and the plate is spinning (Dudgeon and Wedgewood, 1993). Streamlines calculated for the Newtonian fluid show a very small recirculation region near the stationary plate. Velocity and stress contours are symmetric around the plane of largest gap width. For the elastic fluids studied, streamlines are asymmetric. The fluid response lags where the fluid is dominated by memory effects. Much larger recirculation regions are calculated for fluids dominated by shear thinning. These recirculation regions contain a large fraction of the fluid in the apparatus and have the effect of changing the shape of the flow domain for the remaining fluid that rotates around the cone's axis. Elasticity also has a pronounced effect on the stress profile, indicating that the accuracy of the cone and plate may be compromised even for small mis-alignments.

    Description: Inter-population variation in the life histories of stream animals has been demonstrated to be induced by environmental differences between sites, which could be a direct consequence of differential food availability. The caenogastropod Sulcospira hainanensis (Bröt, 1872) is an abundant consumer in tropical Hong Kong streams. This gonochoristic, ovoviviparous pachychilid tends to maintain higher standing stocks and productivity in less shaded sites. We hypothesized that differences in algal food availability induce diversification of life-history and demographic traits between snail populations. To test this, we compared S. hainanensis populations in four Hong Kong streams with differing conditions of shading (two shaded, two unshaded) and algal availability. Life-table analyses were also conducted for two of these snail populations in a shaded and an unshaded stream. Snails tended to grow faster and reach sexual maturity more quickly in the unshaded streams we studied, which may reflect higher assimilation of more nutritious algal food. Except for shorter life spans of snails in these unshaded streams, other reproductive and demographic attributes were mostly similar among populations; in particular, brood size and reproductive output did not appear to be strongly affected by the availability of algae. Seasonal disturbances due to wet-season spates in monsoonal Hong Kong, which appear to cause significant stochastic variability in snail abundance, may override the deterministic role of resource availability and/or other environmental variables, in inducing the observed pattern of phenotypic plasticity of S. hainanensis . The present study is the first to incorporate both life-table and secondary-production analyses for a tropical stream snail. Such combined studies have rarely been undertaken on stream animals, which mainly comprise amphibiotic insects, because of the difficulty of constructing life tables for insects with biphasic life cycles and high mobility. Snails are more readily studied and we advocate the wider use of field-based life tables and production estimates in combination so as to provide greater understanding of the role of snails in energy flow and trophic dynamics.
