    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: A representative collection of hydrothermal manifestations was sampled practically from all hydrothermal mounds of the Broken Spur hydrothermal vent field with use of the Mir manned submersibles during three cruises of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. Mineral associations characteristic for different morphological types of sulfide ores from hydrothermal pipes, plates, and diffusers are assessed. Particular attention is paid to distribution of minor elements and their distribution patterns determined by mineralogical zonation. Measured isotopic composition of sulfur in sulfide minerals varies from 0.4 to 5.2 per mil that indicates their similarity with ores from the Snake Pit vent field and is related to dilution of hot ore-bearing solutions by seawater and reduction of water sulfate ions to H2S with heavy isotopic composition.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Surface hydrothermal deposits of the shallow-water Menez Gwen vent field located in the rift zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge are mostly composed of nonmetalliferous minerals in contrast to sulfide deposits of deep-water fields. Here sulfide minerals occur only in dispersed form. High-temperature sulfide deposits strongly enriched in copper and zinc occur only immediately below the surface of the bottom. This is related to subsurface boiling and phase separation of initial high-temperature hydrothermal ore-bearing solution that ascends from the interior to the floor surface.

Translated from Okeanologiya, 2007, 47(4), 577-593, Oceanology, 47(4), 537-553, https://doi.org/10.1134/S000143700704011X
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Two genetically different types of authigenic carbonate mounds are studied: (1) from an active hydrothermal field related to serpentinite protrusions in a zone of intersection of a transform fracture zone with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, (2) from an active field of methane seepings in the Dnieper canyon of the Black sea. General geochemical conditions, under which authigenic carbonate formation occurs within these two fields, were found. They include: presence of reduced H2S, H2, and CH4 gases at absence of free oxygen; high alkalinity of waters participating in carbonate formation; similarity of textural and structural features of authigenic aragonite, which represents the initial carbonate mineral of the mounds; paragenesis of aragonite with sulfide minerals; close relation of carbonate mounds with communities of sulfate-reducing and methane-oxidizing microorganisms. A new mechanism of formation of hydrothermal authigenic carbonates is suggested. It implies their microbial sulfate reduction over hydrogen from fluid in the subsurface mixing zone of hydrothermal solution and adjacent seawater.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Mineralogy and geochemistry of sulfide-bearing rocks and ores discovered within the Menez Gwen Hydrothermal Field are studied. Samples were taken during Cruise 49 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh of the p.p. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology. Mineral composition of rocks and ores were studied by traditional methods of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (CAMSCAN), and microprobe analysis (EPMA SX-50). Contents of trace elements were determined by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Zn-Cu ore comprises zonal sulfide chimney intergrowths. Numerous Se-rich copper ore fragments occur in volcanomictic layered gritstones and/or barite slabs. Mineral composition, zonality and association of trace elements in ore are typical of black smokers formed at the basalt base near the Azores Triple Junction in the MAR. Obtained results make it possible to reconstruct formation history of the Menez Gwen Hydrothermal Field into the high-temperature (Cu-Se association in ore clasts), medium-temperature (Zn-Cu-As association in ore), and recent (Ba-SiO2 association) stages.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: A complete section of an unconsolidated sedimentary sequence about 5 m thick was sampled in the western margin of the Campeche Bank with use of gravity cores. The sequence forms a flat sea bottom at depth of 51-53 m and rests on a consolidated basement composed of coral limestones and carbonate sandstones. Initiation of deposition of unconsolidated sediments in this area is related to a sea transgression caused by sea level rise that followed the Würm glaciation stage about 10-11 ky ago. Analysis of grain size and chemical compositions of sediments and study of biogenic carbonate remains made it possible to outline environmental changes in this region during the last 10 ky.

Description: The book summarizes data on distribution and composition of sedimentary material suspended in waters of the Atlantic Ocean and its seas. Results of observations of Soviet and foreign expeditions are given. Distribution of suspended matter in sections across the ocean, as well as in the most studied seas are shown. New data on grain size, mineral and chemical composition of suspended matter are published. Summary of history of investigation of bottom sediments from the Atlantic Ocean from the first scientific cruises to the present is done. A brief description of sediment types in the ocean and a detailed description of Mediterranean Sea sediments are given.
