Description: SUMMARY Pointe du Hoc overlooking the English Channel in Normandy, France was host to one of the most important military engagements of World War II but is vulnerable to cliff collapses that threaten important German fortifications including the forward observation post (OP) and Rudder's command post. The objective of this study is to apply advanced 3-D resistivity tomography towards a detailed site stability assessment with special attention to the two at-risk buildings. 3-D resistivity tomography data sets at Pointe du Hoc in the presence of extreme topography and dense cultural clutter have been successfully acquired, inverted and interpreted. A cliff stability hazard assessment scheme has been designed in which regions of high resistivity are interpreted as zones of open, dry fractures with a moderate mass movement potential. Regions of low resistivity are zones of wet, clay-filled fractures with a high mass movement potential. The OP tomography results indicate that the highest mass movement hazard appears to be associated with the marine caverns at the base of the cliff that are positioned at the point of strongest wave attack. These caverns likely occupy the future site of development of a sea arch that will threaten the OP building. The mass movement potential at the Rudder's command post area is low to moderate. The greatest risk there is associated with soil wedge failures at the top of the cliffs.

Description: Packaging represents an important part in the microintegration of sensors based on microelectromechanical system (MEMS). Besides miniaturization and integration density, functionality and reliability in combination with flexibility in packaging design at moderate costs and consequently high-mix, low-volume production are the main requirements for future solutions in packaging. This study investigates possibilities employing printed circuit board (PCB-)based assemblies to provide high flexibility for circuit designs together with film assisted transfer molding (FAM) to package sensors. The feasibility of FAM in combination with PCB and MEMS as a packaging technology for highly sensitive inertia sensors is being demonstrated. The results prove the technology to be a viable method for damage-free packaging of stress- and pressure-sensitive MEMS.

Description: Article Brown adipocytes are rich in mitochondria and influence whole-body energy balance. Here, Duteil et al . show that the lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) controls mitochondrial biogenesis and the formation of brown-like adipocytes, and that LSD1 overexpression in white fat reduces weight gain of mice on a high-fat diet. Description: ABSTRACT Magnetic resonance sounding (MRS) has increasingly become an important method in hydrogeophysics because it allows for estimations of essential hydraulic properties such as porosity and hydraulic conductivity. A resistivity model is required for magnetic resonance sounding modelling and inversion. Therefore, joint interpretation or inversion is favourable to reduce the ambiguities that arise in separate magnetic resonance sounding and vertical electrical sounding (VES) inversions. A new method is suggested for the joint inversion of magnetic resonance sounding and vertical electrical sounding data. A one-dimensional blocky model with varying layer thicknesses is used for the subsurface discretization. Instead of conventional derivative-based inversion schemes that are strongly dependent on initial models, a global multi-objective optimization scheme (a genetic algorithm [GA] in this case) is preferred to examine a set of possible solutions in a predefined search space. Multi-objective joint optimization avoids the domination of one objective over the other without applying a weighting scheme. The outcome is a group of non-dominated optimal solutions referred to as the Pareto-optimal set. Tests conducted using synthetic data show that the multi-objective joint optimization approximates the joint model parameters within the experimental error level and illustrates the range of trade-off solutions, which is useful for understanding the consistency and conflicts between two models and objectives. Overall, the Levenberg-Marquardt inversion of field data measured during a survey on a North Sea island presents similar solutions. However, the multi-objective genetic algorithm method presents an efficient method for exploring the search space by producing a set of non-dominated solutions. Borehole data were used to provide a verification of the inversion outcomes and indicate that the suggested genetic algorithm method is complementary for derivative-based inversions.

Description: Article The histone demethylase Lsd1 regulates the balance between self-renewal and differentiation in human embryonic stem cells. Here, the authors show that the loss of Lsd1 in the trophectoderm of mouse embryos leads to premature differentiation of trophoblast stem cells, partially due to de-repression of the transcription factor Ovol2 .
