Notes: Abstract The fullerene skeleton offers the possibility of attaching several dendrimer branches. Thus, starburst-dendrimers are obtained that might lead to self-limiting generation because of very large, sterically overburdened molecular systems. Two approaches for the generation of molecular models of such fullerene dendrimers are presented: Molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics calculations have been performed to explore the geometries and energetics of the compounds. The other approach utilized an empirical 3D structure generator that started from information on only the constitution of the molecules concerned.

Notes: Abstract Do the chemical properties of the surface of a carbon sheet depend on its shape? This question addresses a criterion for chemical behaviour that has hardly been investigated previously. The current neglect of this question may be due to the fact that suitable model systems with easily distinguishable graphitic surfaces were essentially unknown until the discovery [1] and synthesis [2,3,4] of fullerenes, nanotubes and other related forms of carbon. In this study, we present the first systematic comparison of the chemical behaviour of the convex outer and the concave inner surfaces of C60 by analysing the results of semiempirical and DFT calculations on exohedral and endohedral complexes with H- and F-atoms as well as with the methyl radical. We show that such extremely reactive species are trapped by the extraordinary inert inner surface of C60 and do not undergo chemical reactions.

Notes: Summary Substituting carbon atoms of fullerenes by heteroatoms and vacancies will lead to new and yet unknown spherical-shaped molecules termed hereafter as heterofullerenes. The enormous structural diversity of these molecules is investigated and their structural, electronic and thermochemical properties are predicted using semiempirical computations. Computational results for complexes with ions lead to the hypothesis that these molecules behave like microscopic Faraday cages in which the electrons concentrate on the outer side of the sphere. It is predicted that some of these heterofullerenes are structurally and electronically similar to phthalocyanines and related molecules but offer many additional advantages. Potential uses such as adding heterofullerenes to fullerene materials, as superior starting materials for the fabrication of diamonds, as catalysts in hydrogenation reactions, as components of materials dominated until now by phthalocyanines, etc., are discussed. Simple synthetic routes to these compounds that are based on minor alternations of existing methods for fullerene production are proposed. On the basis of the thermochemical calculations, we believe that the most promising possibility consists of using metal cyanide/graphite composite target rods instead of pure graphite rods as in a conventional fullerene synthesis.

Notes: Side-chain modifications of fullerenes can be achieved starting from the malonic acid 2, which is easily accessible by saponification of the corresponding diethyl malonate adduct 1 and is therefore an ideal building block for side chain chemistry on fullerenes. Coupling reactions are carried out via the synthesis of the fullerene active ester 4, which is formed by the reaction of the malonic acid 2 with N-hydroxysuccinimide. During this reaction the malonic acid undergoes decarboxylation, yielding an acetic acid derivative instead of a malonic system. The active ester 4 is isolable and represents an ideal building block for fullerene chemistry. Sidechain modifications can also be carried out as one-step reactions by preparing 4 in situ. We have performed coupling reactions with various compounds containing primary or secondary amino groups.

Notes: The synthesis, complete characterization and molecular dynamics simulations of dendrimers 4-8 involving [60]fullerene as core tecton and first- to thirdgeneration benzyl-ether-based dendrons as branches is described. In dendrimer 7 a core branching multiplicity of 12, the highest known to date, is realized for the first time with a Th-symmetrical C60 core having an octahedral addition pattern. This unique structural type of core building block is only possible on the base of C60 and has no precedent in organic chemistry. NMR investigations as well as molecular modelling studies show that, owing to high core branching multiplicity, dendrimer 7 and to a minor extent the mixed adduct 8 already represent globular and densely packed macromolecules, although only first-generation dendrons are involved in their construction.

Notes: The synthesis, isolation, and spectroscopic characterization of the bisimino[60]fullerenes C60(NCOOR)2 (1a: R = Et, 1b. R = tBu) with a cis-1 addition pattern as well as of their regioisomeric analogues 2-7 with different addition patterns are described. Whereas compounds 2-7 are typical fulleroaziridines and obey the rule of the minimization of [5,6] double bonds, the cis-1 isomers 1a and 1b represent the first examples of fullerene derivatives with open transannular [6,6] bonds. Characteristic features within the fullerene framework of these valence isomers VI are the presence of a doubly bridged open 14-membered ring with a phenanthrene perimeter as well as of an 8-membered 1,4-diazocine heterocycle. Moreover, it is shown that, by transforming cis-1-C60(NCOOtBu)2 (1b) into cis-1-C60(NH)2 (1c), the fullerene cage can be closed in an intraring 2π→2s̰ isomerization to valence isomer V. These are the first chemical modifications of the fullerene core that allow the synthesis of both open and closed valence isomers with the same addition pattern. Density-functional as well as AM1 calculations corroborate the experimental findings that it depends on the addition pattern as well as on the nature of the addends whether or not the transannular [6,6] bonds are closed. Only in the cis-1 adducts C60(NR)2 that prefer planar imino bridges (e.g., carbamates or amides) are the open forms VI more stable than the closed isomers V.
