Summary A new reaction for the detection of thallium is described, in which the thallium is precipitated by K2(HgI4) as an orange-yellow crystalline precipitate. Under the microscope the precipitate is seen to consist of yellow, rectangular or rod-shaped crystals, often grouped together to form crosses or star-shaped clusters (Figs. 1 to 3). The crystals belong to the tetragonal system, exhibit straight extinction, and are optically positive. Limit of identification, 0,1γ Tl.Limiting concentration, 5γ Tl per ml. Silver, lead, stannous tin and trivalent arsenic interfere with the reaction, but the elements of the ammonium sulphide group, alkaline earths, and alkalis, do not. A brief description is also given of three new crystalline compounds discovered in the course of the above work, i. e. the compounds which K2(HgI4) forms with lead ions, and with CsCl, and with a mixture of CsCl and RbCl.
Abstract:
Kristallsystem: tetragonal;Grenzkonzentration: 5γTl/I ccm;Erfassungsgrenze: 0,1γ Tl.
