    Notes: Abstract Fine-grained sediments comprise about 70% of all sediments and sedimentary rocks. In the past decade, research on these deposits has increasingly looked at processes and process-responses. While much of the earlier work was devoted to large-scale stratigraphic and petrologic studies, the present active frontiers appear to be in microstratigraphy, properties of grain aggregates and bulk characteristics, and the origins of these aggregates. Clays have historically been well studied, but silts are relatively poorly understood. Much of the geologic record must be reexamined.

    Notes: During the period from 1967 through 1972, a sampling programme was completed to determine the economic potential of heavy metals in the beach and river sands of the southern California coastal zone. These samples were employed to test the hypothesis that sand composition in a given beach cell is dominantly controlled by the provenance draining into that cell and is not strongly influenced by longshore leakage from upcurrent cells. Sample sets obtained before and after the exceptional flood of 1969 made it possible to compare the sediment supplied by normal river flow with that supplied by a major flood. Multivariate statistical analysis of the heavy mineral distribution of southern California beaches and rivers indicate that the sand composition of the two northern cells is controlled by the dominantly sedimentary Transverse Range provenance, whereas the composition of the three southern cells is controlled by the dioritic Peninsular Ranges. Some leakage occurs between the two northern cells around the Point Dume-Hueneme-Mugu Canyon Zone, whereas no important southward mixing occurs between cells around the Palos Verdes-Redondo Canyon Zone. Even though the Santa Clara River flows mostly through sedimentary terrains, samples from this river strongly reflect the granodioritic source present in its headlands. Although the basic sand composition within each cell persists during major flooding, leakage between cells may increase following flooding and the compositional packages present may show evidence of greater mixing.

    Notes: The history of St. Joseph Bay, on the west coast of Florida, begins with the last rise in sea level about 5,000 years ago. The formation of an extensive cuspate spit has formed a basin which is now in the process of being filled by detrital sands delivered via longshore drift from the eastern Apalachicola River. Prior to or during early stages of spit development, a wedge of fine material was deposited over the old terrace surface from an old distributary of the Apalachicola. Present sedimentation has as yet failed to obscure portions of this older surface within the lagoon.Clean quartz sand and biological carbonates comprise the bulk of the present sediment contribution. The typical East Gulf “kyanite-staurolite” heavy mineral suite is present, as is the kaolinite-montmorillonite-illite clay mineral suite common to this coast.Sediments in this area have an average organic content of about 1.4%. A high organic carbon/organic nitrogen average of 15.4 has resulted from the accumulation of highly carbonaceo us plant debris under the restrictive environment of the lagoon.

    Notes: Abstract Two sets of channel-like depressions occur on the upper continental slope between Point Arguello and Point Conception, California. The shallowest features are 150 m wide, 500+ m long, with a maximum negative relief of 10 m, and trend downslope between water depths of 120 to 300 m. They have a periodic spacing of about 1.7 km. The deeper depressions are 60 to 200 m wide, 500+ m long downslope, negative relief of 1 to 10 m, and in the depth range from 200 to 500 m. They occur at spacings of 0.5 to 1 km. Side-scan data reveal outcrops of resistant material within the depressions. Evidence for erosion of surficial material is present in box core data; bottom photographs show ripples within one channel. Some mechanisms of formation, including bioerosion, current scour, and liquefaction, are discussed.

    Description: Analysis of piston cores from lower slopes of central and outer basins of the California Continental Borderland shows the presence of structures ranging from starved silt ripples and lenses to erosion surfaces and truncated burrows to cross-bedded units that testify to reworking of the sediments by bottom currents. Adjacent basin-floor piston cores do not reveal these structures, but exhibit the usual bioturbated hemipelagic mud and turbidites. Slope sediments generally contain more silt than the adjacent basin-floor clay silts. The slope grain-size distributions are multimodal as a result of mixing of hemipelagic mud and thin (millimetre scale) silt layers as a consequence of the sampling intervals at centimetre scale. Carbonate and organic carbon contents tend to be low during the glacial periods but variations from this pattern occur that are probably related to the shift in the upwelling associated with the California Counter Current between inter-glacial and glacial conditions. The evidence for reworking is most abundant from late in Marine Isotope Stage 5 (MIS 5) to early Stage 4 (MIS 4), and it decreases into the Holocene. No structures are observed in the Holocene sections of the slope cores. The temporal distribution of the reworking structures can be explained either by changes in the degree of bioturbation (bottom-water oxygenation), which would work to erase the structures, or variation in the intensity of lower slope circulation through time. The observed pattern is in rough agreement with documented changes in bottom-water oxygenation conditions for these basins. However, the occurrence of reworking is also dominantly within glacial intervals, where lower sea levels produce stronger circulation within the basins as a result of exposure of banks and resulting restriction of cross-sections of the deeper flow pathways. These observations add to the increasing evidence that sediment transport by bottom currents is not restricted to the intensively studied western boundary current drift deposits. The action of bottom currents on eastern boundary slopes can introduce subtle effects on what are commonly assumed to be continuous records.
