Notes: Basic invariants, such as conserved quantities, symmetries, mastersymmetries, and recursion operators are explicitly constructed for the following nonlinear lattice systems: The modified Korteweg–de Vries lattice, the Ablowitz–Ladik lattice, the Brusci–Ragnisco lattice, the Ragnisco–Tu lattice and some cases of the class of integrable systems introduced by Bogoyavlensky. The algorithmic basis for obtaining these quantities is described and the interrelation between the underlying mastersymmetry approach and the Lax pair analysis is discussed. By explicit presentation of the higher-order members of the corresponding hierarchies new completely integrable lattice flows are found. For all systems, multi-Hamiltonian formulations are given.

Notes: Explicit computation for a Kawamoto-type equation shows that there is a rich associated symmetry structure for four separate hierarchies of nonlinear integrodifferential equations. Contrary to the general belief that symmetry groups for nonlinear evolution equations in 1+1 dimensions have to be Abelian, it is shown that, in this case, the symmetry group is noncommutative. Its semisimple part is isomorphic to the affine Lie algebra A(1)1 associated to sl(2,C). In two of the additional hierarchies that were found, an explicit dependence of the independent variable occurs. Surprisingly, the generic invariance for the Kawamoto-type equation obtained in Rogers and Carillo [Phys. Scr. 36, 865 (1987)] via a reciprocal link to the Möbius invariance of the singularity equation of the Kaup–Kupershmidt (KK) equation only holds for one of the additional hierarchies of symmetry groups. Thus the generic invariance is not a universal property for the complete symmetry group of equations obtained by reciprocal links. In addition to these results, the bi-Hamiltonian formulation of the hierarchy is given. A direct Bäcklund transformation between the (KK) hierarchy and the hierarchy of singularity equation for the Caudrey–Dodd–Gibbon–Sawada–Kotera equation is exhibited: This shows that the abundant symmetry structure found for the Kawamoto equation must exist for all fifth-order equations, which are known to be completely integrable since these equations are connected either by Bäcklund transformations or reciprocal links. It is shown that similar results must hold for all hierarchies emerging out of singularity hierarchies via reciprocal links. Furthermore, general aspects of the results are discussed.

Notes: A simple and straightforward method for generating completely integrable nonlinear evolution equations with time-dependent coefficients is presented herein. For the equations under consideration, the solutions to those given by vector fields which are independent of time are given, thus explicit links between equations are obtained. As an application of the proposed method it is shown that the linear superposition, with arbitrary time-dependent coefficients, of different members of an integrable hierarchy is again integrable. Furthermore, it turns out that for some integrable equations [like the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV), the Benjamin–Ono (BO), or the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP) the resolvent operator of lower order flows can be explicitly obtained from that of any higher order flow. Those flows (demonstrated for the KdV) which can be generated by Lie homomorphisms coming from first order problems are completely classified. Many well-known equations which can be found in the literature are of that type. As an application of such a first order link a direct link is given from KdV to the cylindrical KdV, and from there to the KP with nontrivial dependence on the second spatial variable.

Notes: Conserved quantities, bi-Hamiltonian formulation, and recursive structure of the relativistic Toda lattice (RT) are obtained in an algorithmic way without making use of the Lax representation. Furthermore, for the multisoliton solutions the gradients of the angle variables are described in terms of mastersymmetries. A new hierarchy of completely integrable systems is discovered, which turns out to correspond to the "negative'' of the hierarchy of RT. Thus it is shown that the full algebra of time-dependent symmetry group generators for each member of the RT hierarchy is isomorphic to the algebra of first order differential operators with Laurent polynomials as coefficients. The surprising phenomenon is revealed that the members of the RT hierarchy are connected to their negative counterparts by explicit Bäcklund transformation.
