Notes:
Summary Starting from the hydro-thermodynamical energy equation the result is derived, that the thermodynamic efficiency μ irrev of a steady atmospheric circulation within a closed stream-surfaceS is given by $$\mu _{irrev} = \frac{{L_s }}{{4\pi \cdot \left( {q + } \right)m}} \cdot \frac{S}{M},$$ whereM denotes the entire mass of the circulation,L 8 the average of the irreversible work (ergs per cm2 and second) done by the circulation on the surroungings at the surfaceS, and (q +) m the average of the heat-source strengths (ergs per gramme and second) referred to the entire massM. The comparison of spatial different, but energetically similar circulations with the same value of the fractionL 8/(q +) m therefore shows, that the efficiency must decrease with increasing linear dimensions in all directions, since in this case the massM increase more rapidly than the stream-surfaceS.
