Description:
Theories concerning the resonance which gives rise to the tidal heating of Io are discussed. Yoder's (1979) suggestion that the resonance is maintained by tides raised on Jupiter by Io is examined along with the proposal of Greenberg (1982) that with smaller Jovian torque the system could be evolving away from resonance. The significance of Lieske's (1986) finding of a much smaller than expected negative value for Io's orbital acceleration is addressed.
