Description: The abundances of 29 elements in 33 samples of tholeiitic basalts from five volcanoes in Hawaii are determined by neutron-activation analysis; the results are presented in tables and graphs with the data of Murali et al. (1977) for a sixth volcano and characterized in detail; and geochemical partial-melting models are constructed to explain the origin of these basalts. The models proposed are based on olivine crystallization from three distinct source compositions (determined from the REE and Sc partitioning) and correspond to the volcano groups Mauna Kea, Kohala, and Kilauea; Mauna Loa and Lanai; and Koolau.
