Outlines some of the dramatic changes which have had an impact onpublic sector organizations in the United Kingdom, and the likelyeffects for employees. Argues that enhanced demands which haveaccompanied these changes create a cumulative spiral of pressures fororganization members, rendering them susceptible to the adverse effectsof work stress. This view is supported by a case study which outlinesthe experiences of one large public sector organization subject to thechange process. Consequently, it is essential that the issue of stressand its management features increasingly on the agenda of efficient andeffective public sector managers. Presents a practical, all-encompassingaction model, total stress management, as one approach to enableorganizations and their members to cope effectively with the stress ofchange in the public sector.
