Summary Intestinal absorption of different amounts of Na+ was followedin vivo and in an isolated piece of small intestine perfused with bloodvia its natural route. Normal rats display saturation kinetics whereas rats dying from the G I syndrome absorb Na+ by simple diffusion. The data indicate that the perfused intestine is a system suitable to study absorption under physiological conditions.
