Abstract Scanning electron micrographs of points of fracture initiation on soda-lime glass surfaces show that the initial stages of crack propagation are complex. The circular intersection of the initial crack path with the final fracture plane is not a measure of the critical flaw depth for initiation of fracture; flaw depths measured by an etching technique are more reliable. Possible explanations for the initial crack paths observed are explored.
