Notes: Summary 1. In order to obtain the greatest power from the atomic power plant for a given surface area of fuel elements, there exists an optimum mean-arithmetic temperature Tav of the coolant in the reactor. 2. The (gross) power of the plant turbines will be higher, the lower the total temperature increment ΔT of the coolant in the reactor. When ΔT drops below a certain critical value, the (gross)power increment in the turbines drops below the power increment in the pump driving the coolant. Approximate calculations show that the critical value of ΔT is, in many cases, lower than 100 °C. 3. The error in the method outlined for determining the optimum value of Tav at ΔT = 100 °C is less than 10 °C. 4. In executing several cycles with successive supply of heat from the coolant in the power loop, the optimum values, absolute temperatures at which heat is supplied to those cycles, and the extreme absolute temperatures of the coolant (eliminating temperature gradients) form a geometric progression. 5. The use of regeneration, raising the average temperature at which heat energy is supplied, has a different character in atomic electric power plants than in conventional heat-power electric power plants, where the development of regeneration up to a certain limit is always economically feasible. The presence of an optimum mean temperature at which heat is supplied in steam power cycles of atomic electric power plants limits the application of regeneration to those cases where it can be used to lower the humidity of the steam at the end of the expansion, or to satisfy other requirements imposed on the cycle.
