Alkaline Cleavage of Methyl (S)-N-Nitroso-(1-phenylethyl)carbamateIn methanol, the title reaction afforded styrene, 1-methoxy-1-phenylethane (2) with partial inversion, and 1-phenylethanol (3) with predominant retention of configuration. The degree of inversion associated with the formation of 2 was independent of the concentration of methoxide but was decreased by the addition of 1.2-dimethoxyethane and of lithium perchlorate. It is concluded that direct displacement does not contribute to the formation of 2. Added lithium azide competed efficiently with methanol only in dimethoxyethane/methanol (4:1) mixtures, producing 1-phenylethyl azide (4 with 74% inversion (26% retention). The configuration and rotation of optically active 4 has been established.
    Notes: In Methanol ergab die Titelreaktion Styrol, 1-Methoxy-1-phenyl-äthan (2) mit partieller Inversion und 1-Phenyl-äthanol (3) mit überwiegender Retention. Das Ausmaß der Inversion bei der Bildung von 2 war von der Methylat-Konzentration unabhängig, wurde jedoch durch Zusatz von 1.2-Dimethoxy-äthan und von Lithiumperchlorat vermindert SN2-Prozesse sind an der Bildung von 2 offenbar nicht beteiligt. Zugesetztes Lithiumazid konnte nur in Dimethoxyäthan/Methanol (4:1) wirksam mit Methanol konkurrieren und lieferte 1-phenyl-äthylazid (4) mit 74% Inversion (26% Retention). Die Konfiguration und Drehung von optisch aktivem 4 wurden bestimmt.
