The morphological, plastic, and elastic strains in Na+-implanted MgO have been determined by measuring the swelling of the surface with a profilometer and in-plane lattice parameters by x-ray diffraction at glancing incidence. The high value of the stress (∼9 GPa) is related to a high dislocation density with very low mobility leading to weak plastic flow (∼0.2%). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
