Notes: Summary 1. An apparatus is described in which a steady temperature gradient can be maintained and in which conditions of temperature and humidity can be accurately measured. 2. The preferred temperature range (indifference zone) of normal adult male Blatta orientalis in this apparatus is 20–29 ° C. 3. The indifference zone is not altered by changes in the humidity of the air. 4. Specimens desiccated to 70% of their original weight show a much lower preferred temperature, namely 12–23 ° C. 5. This is interpreted as a reaction to a gradient of saturation deficiency, an avoiding reaction against air of higher evaporating power.
