Summary The collapse of a mixed fluid mass immersed in a vertically stratified fluid is studied analytically. Simple approximate theories are given for the initial stage of the process for a fully mixed fluid mass in two and three dimensions and for a partially mixed fluid mass in two dimensions. The solutions are obtained via an energy conservation principle and they are exact within the models. They compare favorably with approximate solutions of the same model obtained previously for the two-dimensional fully mixed case.
