Notizen: We report that fullerenes (C60/C70) can be uniformly encased in silica aerogel by sol-gel process together with supercritical drying technique. Intense visible light emission (2.26 eV) is observable with the naked eye from the composite under an Ar+ laser (488 nm) excitation at room temperature. The luminescent intensity is found to increase strongly with low doping of fullerenes (0.05 mol %) and then to decrease while the peak is red shifted, and finally quenched upon heavy doping (up to 2.5 mol %). This effect is consistent with the behavior of the fullerenes entrapped in the micropores linked by the silica networks resulting in the quantum confinement effect which then produce emission far above the interband gap of C60/C70. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The residual impurities in Hg0.8Cd0.2Te crystal have been investigated by using secondary-ion mass spectrometry. It was observed that the impurities are richer in near-surface layer than bulk material. This phenomenon was proved to be related to defect gettering by surface damage. In addition, the measurements of Hall effect and infrared spectra in gettered and ungettered Hg0.8Cd0.2Te wafers have been performed. It was found that the electrical properties of gettered Hg0.8Cd0.2Te wafers were superior to ungettered wafers. The absorption edges moved towards shorter wavelengths and the average transmittance increased in gettered wafers. These can probably be explained by assuming the residual impurity concentration in gettered wafers is relatively low. The results indicate that the defect gettering technique can be used to effectively reduce residual impurities in Hg0.8Cd0.2Te wafers.

Notizen: The optical absorption edges in gettered and ungettered Hg0.8Cd0.2Te alloys have been investigated. It is found that the absorption edge was moved to the short wave direction after the sample was gettered. The change of absorption edge has also been found in Hg0.8Cd0.2Te containing different mercury concentrations. Possible explanations for the phenomena are discussed.

Notizen: Chromium, an EPA listed toxic element concentrated in many industrial wastes, was stabilized using waste vitrification. Cr2O3 and CrO3 were loaded into a simulated basaltic base composition, vitrified, and cooled at various rates. Chromium incorporation mechanisms, vitrification processability, effect of initial Cr oxidation state, and product performance were investigated. At 1500°C, Cr2O3 has a low solubility limit (0.54 wt%) in the base composition, and crystallized as Cr-rich primary spinel (Mg,Fe)(Fe,Al,Cr)2O4. On cooling, Cr-depleted secondary spinel and augite (Na,Ca)(Mg,Fe2+,Al)(Si,Al)2O6 crystallized. Cr(VI) was converted into Cr(III) on vitrification. The apparent viscosity of the melts was estimated using the Bottinga–Weill model as corrected by Roscoe's equation. The end products showed Cr2O3 loading capacities as high as 16.7 wt% without exceeding the toxicity-leaching limit defined by EPA. The annealed products had Vickers's hardness of about 800 kg·F/mm2 and can be classified as medium-grade abrasives.

Notizen: The traditional method to manufacture the medical implant or prosthesis is based onsculpting and on the tissue site,or takes impressions of the entire face about human. The accuracyand efficiency of medical implant or prosthesis produced by conventional method is heavily reliedon the skill and experience of both designer and manufacturer. In this paper, an integrated methodof medical implant manufacture is approached. This integrated strategy was to establish a systemthat allows fabrication of facial prosthesis from digital information, and integrates the rapidprototyping with modeling technology of complex three-dimensional geometry fromhigh-resolution non-invasive imaging, reverse engineering and computer aided design. The researchresults have shown that the integrated method can produce more exact-fit medical implant, that is,the physical model of the implant is more exactly fitted on the skull model. The advantages of thismethod are that the surgeon can plan and rehearse the surgery in advance, and a less invasivesurgical procedure, and less time-consuming reconstructive, and an adequate esthetic can result

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. Relatively large (〉5 µm) and porous (mass density 〈 0.4 g/cm3) particles present advantages for the delivery of drugs to the lungs, e.g., excellent aerosolization properties. The aim of this study was, first, to formulate such particles with excipients that are either FDA-approved for inhalation or endogenous to the lungs; and second, to compare the aerodynamic size and performance of the particles with theoretical estimates based on bulk powder measurements. Methods. Dry powders were made of water-soluble excipients (e.g., lactose, albumin) combined with water-insoluble material (e.g., lung surfactant), using a standard single-step spray-drying process. Aerosolization properties were assessed with a Spinhaler TM device in vitro in both an Andersen cascade impactor and an AerosizerTM.. Results. By properly choosing excipient concentration and varying the spray drying parameters, a high degree of control was achieved over the physical properties of the dry powders. Mean geometric diameters ranged between 3 and 15 µm, and tap densities between 0.04 and 0.6 g/cm3. Theoretical estimates of mass mean aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) were rationalized and calculated in terms of geometric particle diameters and bulk tap densities. Experimental values of MMAD obtained from the AerosizerTM most closely approximated the theoretical estimates, as compared to those obtained from the Andersen cascade impactor. Particles possessing high porosity and large size, with theoretical estimates of MMAD between 1−3 µm, exhibited emitted doses as high as 96% and respirable fractions ranging up to 49% or 92%, depending on measurement technique. Conclusions. Dry powders engineered as large and light particles, and prepared with combinations of GRAS (generally recognized as safe) excipients, may be broadly applicable to inhalation therapy.

Notizen: Abstract High laser-damage resistant coatings are very important in high power laser systems. In this study ZrO2 thin films are prepared by sol-gel spin-coating technology from suitable zirconia aqueous colloidal suspensions containing nano-crystalline ZrO2 at room temperature synthesized by a hydrothermal process from an inorganic precursor (ZrOCl2·8H2O). By adding a soluble organic binder PVP to the suspension prior to application, it is possible to substantially increase the coating refractive index and the abrasion-resistance as well as the laser damage threshold. The features of the coatings and the colloidal suspensions are investigated. Multilayer highly reflective dielectric coatings are also elaborated by applying quarterwave-thick alternating coatings of the binder-aided zirconia and silica, which is prepared with the sol-gel process from TEOS. To achieve 99% reflectivity, 19–21 layers are required. Single shot laser damage tests are carried out using a high power laser at 1064 nm wavelength with a pulse duration of 2.5 ns. The laser damage thresholds of 18 and 15 J/cm2 are achieved for single ZrO2-PVP coating and ZrO2-PVP/SiO2 multilayers respectively.
