    Description: The DARE e-science platform (http://project-dare.eu) offers innovative tools to ease scientific workflow development and execution exploiting efficient Cloud resources. It aims to enable on-demand numerical computations and analyses, fast large dataset handling, flexible and customisable workflow pipelines and complete provenance tracking. It also integrates available e-infrastructure services (e.g. EUDAT, EIDA) and can be linked to user developed interfaces. DARE is validated via two domain-specific pilots, one from the climate modelling community and one from the seismological research field. Focusing on the latter, the EPOS Use Case is driven by urgent issues and general user needs of solid Earth Science community, following developments and application standards in the computational seismology research society. This Use Case also benefits from the pioneering experience of previous European projects (e.g. VERCE, EPOS-IP) in this framework. We present here the development of a scientific workflow to perform a quick calculation of seismic source parameters after an earthquake. The workflow requirements include HPC calculations (on local-institutional or Cloud resources), fast data-intensive processing, provenance exploitation and seismic source inverse modelling tools. The DARE platform automatically conducts the required actions optimally mapped to computational resources, linking them together by managing intermediate data. It automatically deploys the necessary environment to perform on-demand transparent computations executing a dockerised version of the numerical simulation code on a Kubernetes cluster via a web API. Other API calls allow for remote, distributed execution of dispel4py workflows, used to describe the steps for data analysis and download of seismic recorded data via EIDA Research Infrastructure services. Well established scientific python codes, such as those for waveform misfit calculation and source inversion, are thus easily implemented in this flexible and modular structure, and executed at scale. Moreover, the pilot requirement of searching and reusing multiple simulations for the same earthquake strongly benefits from customisable management of metadata and lineage through the DARE platform exploiting the integration of S-ProvFlow with dispel4py.

    Description: Mining, water-reservoir impoundment, underground gas storage, geothermal energy exploitation and hydrocarbon extraction have the potential to cause rock deformation and earthquakes, which may be hazardous for people, infrastructure and the environment. Restricted access to data constitutes a barrier to assessing and mitigating the associated hazards. Thematic Core Service Anthropogenic Hazards (TCS AH) of the European Plate Observing System (EPOS) provides a novel e-research infrastructure. The core of this infrastructure, the IS-EPOS Platform (tcs.ah-epos.eu) connected to international data storage nodes offers open access to large grouped datasets (here termed episodes), comprising geoscientific and associated data from industrial activity along with a large set of embedded applications for their efficient data processing, analysis and visualization. The novel team-working features of the IS-EPOS Platform facilitate collaborative and interdisciplinary scientific research, public understanding of science, citizen science applications, knowledge dissemination, data-informed policy-making and the teaching of anthropogenic hazards related to georesource exploitation. TCS AH is one of 10 thematic core services forming EPOS, a solid earth science European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) (www.epos-ip.org).

    Description: The European Integrated Data Archive (EIDA) is the infrastructure that provides access to the seismic‐waveform archives collected by European agencies. This distributed system is managed by Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology. EIDA provides seamless access to seismic data from 12 data archives across Europe by means of standard services, exposing data on behalf of hundreds of network operators and research organizations. More than 12,000 stations from permanent and temporary networks equipped with seismometers, accelerometers, pressure sensors, and other sensors are accessible through the EIDA federated services. A growing user base currently counting around 3000 unique users per year has been requesting data and using EIDA services. The EIDA system is designed to scale up to support additional new services, data types, and nodes. Data holdings, services, and user numbers have grown substantially since the establishment of EIDA in 2013. EIDA is currently active in developing suitable data management approaches for new emerging technologies (e.g., distributed acoustic sensing) and challenges related to big datasets. This article reviews the evolution of EIDA, the current data holdings, and service portfolio, and gives an outlook on the current developments and the future envisaged challenges.

    Description: The European Database of Seismogenic Faults (EDSF; doi: 10.6092/INGV.IT-SHARE-EDSF) was compiled in the framework of the EU Project SHARE and is now one of the building blocks of the Hazard & Risk pillar of the EU Project EPOS-IP (WP8, TCS Seismology). EDSF includes faults that are deemed to be capable of generating earthquakes of magnitude equal to or larger than 5.5 and aims at ensuring a homogeneous input for use in ground-shaking hazard assessment in the Euro-Mediterranean area. The database was initially conceived as a specific-purpose standalone platform. However, to tackle the challenges ahead in seismological research and meet the new perspectives offered by EPOS, EDSF needs to be revamped. We present the new IT design of EDSF aimed at making it interoperable with other seismological data products within EPOS and illustrate how its enhanced capabilities will improve hazard applications of various types and scales and foster research in active tectonics and geodynamics.

    Description: SEISMOFAULTS.EU is the IT infrastructure designed and implemented to publish datasets that are part of the European Databases of Seismogenic Faults (EDSF) installation hosted by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. It consists of carefully selected and configured hardware and software in order to ensure a reliable, and secure service. The implemented backup solutions and continuous monitoring of the entire platform at various levels safeguard the system from disruptions due to various types of possible malfunctions. The main functionalities of SEISMOFAULTS.EU include the publication of datasets of seismogenic sources of the European and Mediterranean area through the standard web services developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium. Websites related to the same datasets as well as web services related to sibling projects, are also published through the infrastructure. Following government recommendations for public administration, most of the software used in the platform has an open­source license. The main software applications involved in web services publishing are PostgreSQL/PostGIS and GeoServer. SEISMOFAULTS.EU was designed under the auspices of EPOS, Thematic Core Service Seismology, and actively contributed to it by integrating datasets on seismogenic faults in the Euro­Mediterranean area into the EPOS Integrated Core Service ­ Central hub platform. The combination of efforts between EPOS and SEISMOFAULTS.EU strengthens the scientific geoscience community in coordinating efforts aimed at advancing knowledge in the field of seismology and the study of seismogenic sources and earthquake hazard analyses.

    Description: Abstract
    Description: The data set contains stress-strain data of Carrara marble experimentally deformed in triaxial compression at temperatures of 20 – 800°C, confining pressures of 30 – 300 MPa, and strain rates between 10-3 and 10-6 s-1. This range covers conditions, at witch marble deforms in the semi-brittle regime, i.e., strength depends on all parameters, but with different sensitivity. Semi-brittle deformation behavior is expected to be important in the mid continental crust. The experiments were conducted in the Experimental Rock Deformation Laboratory of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany. The data are separated into 91 individual ASCII files, one for each sample. The corresponding temperature, pressure and strain rate conditions are listed in Tab. 1. of the data description and in the associated work by Rybacki et al. (submitted).
    Description: Methods
    Description: Cylindrical samples were prepared from Carrara marble (Bianco Lorano, Apuane Alps, Italy). Samples denoted CMxx, where xx is sample number, were 20 mm long and 10 mm in diameter; samples Mbxx were 60 mm long and 30 mm in diameter. Both set of samples were dry and deformed in two different deformation apparatuses using Argon gas as confining medium. Raw data were axial force and axial displacement, measured with a load cell and LVDT, respectively. Raw data (axial force and displacement) were converted to stress and strain assuming constant volume deformation. All data are corrected for system compliance and jacket strength.

Merian expedition MSM33 in 2013: MSM33-51-3, MSM33-52-1, MSM33-54-3, MSM33-56-1, MSM33-57-1, MSM33-60-1, MSM33-61-1, MSM33-62-2, MSM33-63-1, MSM33-64-1. The data are also described in Nowaczyk et al. (2021). Sediment cores were recovered using gravitiy and piston corers. For paleo- and mineral-magnetic analyses clear plastic boxes of 20×20×15 mm were pressed into the split halves of the generally 1 m long sections of the sediment cores. Data are provided as six ASCII files (.dat, one for each core) with metadata header, followed by 12 data columns and are decribed in the associated data description file (pdf).
